To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHARLES J. Soss and :HENRY Soss, citizens of the United States, and residing at New York in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges, of which the following is a specification, such as will ena-hle those skilled in the art to which it appertnins t make and use the same.
This invention relates to hinges and particularly to what 'are'known as invisible hinges, and the ohject'thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which may be hsed in connection with doors sashes or similar constructions involving a swinging member of any kind or class, but which is particularly designed for use in connection with the doors of automobiles andsimilar vehicles in order to facilitate the disconnection of a door from the frame thereof without detaching the separate parts of the hinge from the door and the frame, a further object being tov provide a hinge of the class specified which will-hold the door or swing in'g member'against either vertical or lateral movement when said door or member is closed, but which will permit the free and easy movement or swinging of the door-in the operation of opening it; and with these and other objects in view the invention. consists in a hinge of the class specified constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of our invention are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a view of our complete hinge and showing the parts in the position they occupy when the door or swinging member to which they ardsecured is fully opened; Fig. 2 a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 a sect-ion on" the line 33 of Fig. 2 and showing the hinge secured to the door frame and door and showing the door open; Fig. 4 a view similar to Fig. 3 but showing the door closed; Fig. 5. a section on the line 5--5 of Fig. 3, andtFig. 6 a view similar to Fig. 3 but omitting the door fume and door and showing modification.

The construction shown in Fig. '6 is the same as the construction shown in Figs. 1
' to 5, except, that the grooves 0* instead of being formed in the parts 0 which, in effect, constitute a part of the ends of the-casing c", are formed in the top and bottom faces of the arm r1 as shown at c, and the pins di are secured in the top and bottom of'the casing 0 or in the plates which form a part thereof. With this construction, as will be seen, the part (1 of the hinge, the arm (Z and its member d are pivoted to the arms 6, which are connected with the plate 6, and the door may be detached from the door frame by simply taking out the screws 6 and lifting or moving the plate 6 and its connected parts out of the casing 0 and said door may be replaced in position, or
inconnection with the frame, by simply inserting the arms 6 and the plate 6 into position and securing them by means of the screws 6. This will be a greatadvantage, especially when our improved hinge or hinges are used in connection with the door of an automobile or similar vehicle, and the casing c which includes the movable parts of the hinge will also be of great advantage by'reason of the fact that itwill exclude water from the .door frame or the material thereof in the operation of washing or cleaning the door and door frame.
We are aware that ahinge composed of separate parts adapted to be connected with the door frame and door and having an arm similar to the arm (it and the member d is broadly 'speaking,
old, but our improvement consists in providing grooves 0* in the top and bottom of the casing 0 and the pins (Z movable in said grooves, or the corresponding construction shown in Fig. 6, together with the arms a connected with, or forming a part of, the plate 6', and the part c of the casingc in which the grooves are formed, in the construction-shown in Figs. 1 to fi inclusive, or the corresponding construction shown in Fig. 6. With this form of construction the pins, d operating in the grooves 0 or in the grooves 0 form guides for the arm (i and hold said arm against vertical or lateral movement of any kind and against any movement at all, except the-swinging movement necessary in opening or closing the door, and this prevents the sagging of the door and holds it in proper operative position at all times. The pins 01 also operate to lock the door against any movement away from the door frame, when said door is in the closed position or in the position shown in Fig. 4:, it being evident that in this position of the parts of the hinge, there can e and the arm (i of that part Offithe. hinge which is secured to the door, and when the door is closed, the hinge is entirely con cealed, or in other words, is invisible. It
must be understood however, that our invention is not limited to the closed casing 0 connected with and forming a part of the hinge butt plate c, as any suitable support may be provided in connection with said butt plate for the part c in which the grooves c are formed, in the construction shown in Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive, or for the pins d in the. construction shown in Fig. 6. It must also be understood that the construction shown in Fig. 6 will not lock the door when closed against tendency to move away from the frame but for all other purposes it will work the same as the construction shown in Figs. 1 to '5 inclusive; and
although we have described the parts 0 in the constructionshown in Figs. 1 to 5 inclusi've as provided with grooves c in which the pins 03? move, it must be understood that these grooves are not absolutely essentialas a convex inner bearing or surface of any kind formed in connection with or attached to the casing 0 over which the pins (1 would move'in the operation of opening and clos-' in the door would accomplish the same resu t as the groove of or, in other words, the
