Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 12 1918.
Application filed April 14, 1916. Serial No. 91,074.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN G. GARLAND and JACOB A. CLINARD, citizens of the United States, residing at High Point, in the county of Guilford and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Step-Ladders and Ironing-Boards; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to makeand use the same.
This invention relates to a combined step ladder and ironing board, wherein the supporting legs of the step ladder may be employed in connection with the treads of the step ladder for forming an ironing board support, and also to provide a combined step ladder and ironing board structure, wherein the ironing board may be quickly and easily attached to or detached from the step ladder structure.
A further object of this invention is to provide in a structure as specified, supporting legs for the step ladder, which are braced by transversely extending rods, which rods coact with hooks carried by the tread section of the step ladder for connecting the tread section of the step ladder to the bracing legs, and which rods may be utilized as clothes hangers or a clothes rack when the device used as an ironing board.
With the foregoing and other objects in view this invention consists in'suoh novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of partsas will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters designate like and corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective View of the improved combination step ladder and ironing board showing the ironing board in an extended position,
Fig. 2 is a side elevation, showing parts broken away, of the device employed as a step ladder,
Fig. 3 is a verticalsection through the combined step ladder and ironing board showing the. ironing board in an extended position and lower than the position of the ironing board as illustrated in Fig. 1,
Fig. at is an edge of the device folded,
Fig. 5 is a bottom plan view of the ironing board,
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary perspective of a part of the bottom of the ironing board illustrating the hooks by means of which it is attached to the tread section of the step ladder, and I Fig. 7 is a detail perspective view of the lower end of the bracing leg of the ironing board structure.
Referring more particularly to the draw ings, 1 designates a prop structure of the step ladder and ironing board. which con1- prises a pair of spaced vertical legs or bars 2 and 3, which are connected by a plurality of transversely extending rods 4. The spaced legs and 3 have brace bars 5 pivotally connected thereto as is shown at 6, which brace bars are also pivotally connected as shown at T to the side stiles 8 of the tread section of the step ladder. The stiles 8 have treads or steps 9 connected thereto at the usual distances apart, and they have a rod 10 connected thereto adjacent the under side and near the front edge of the top tread or step 9 and extending transversely from one stile to the other which rod is the same shape and size as the bracing rod 4.
The ironing board structure 11 includes the ironing board pro-per 12 which has a bar 3 attached to its under surface in any suitable manner. The bar 13 has hooks 14 connected thereto. which hooks are constructed of sheet metal or the like and have their curved ends shaped for snugly fitting about the rod 10. The bar 13 has one of the hooks attached. to its under surface adjacent to each of its ends.
The ironing board 12 has a bracing leg 16 hingedly connected to its under surface as shown at 17. a short distance inwardly from its outer end. The bracing leg 16 has the under surface of its free end cut away to provide a shoulder 18 adapted to engage the edge of the tread 9, when the ironing board. structure is supported in its higher position as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
hen the ironing board structure 11 is supported in its higher position as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings, the hooks 20, which are attached to the inner edges of the stiles 8 of the step ladder structure are mounted about the second of the bracing rod which is indicated by the numeral 4:.
When the ironing board 12 is supported in its lower position, the hooks 20 are mounted about the third bracing rod, which is indicated by the numeral 4, and the lug 21 which is attached to the under surface of the supporting leg 16 forms a shoulder adapted to engage the outer edge of the tread or step 9 while the under surface of the supporting leg 16 which extends outwardly from the lug 21 engages the upper surface of the tread as clearly illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawings. This rigidly supports the ironing board 12 in a horizontal position, at a lower elevation, than it is supported when the hooks 20 are connected to the bracing rod i When the ironing board is in position for use, its inner end engages the outer edge of the top tread 9. This on gagement and the hooks 14, hold the ironing board 12 against any inward or outward movements during the ironing operation. l/Vhen the ironing board 12 is in parallel position with relation to the tread section, the inner end of the ironing board 12 is spaced far enough from the tread 9 to permit the ironing board 12 to be readily and quickly removed when it is desired to use the device as a step ladder.
In Fig. 2 of the drawings, the ironing board structure is disconnected from the step ladder structure, and the device is'illustrated as a step ladder at which time the hooks 20 are engaged over the uppermost of the cross rods 4.
In Fig. A of the drawings, the entire de vice is illustrated in a folded position for storage, at which time movement of the ironing board structure 11, is prevented by a button 22 which is pivotally connected as shown at 23 to the top tread or step 9 and extends outwardly and at its outer end will engage the upper end of the ironing board structure 11. When the device is in a folded position, the hooks 14L are engaged over the cross brace rod 10. The braces 5 are provided with cut out portions 24-, which are provided for permitting of the folding of the structure into a compact form, and preventing the engagement of the braces with the bracing rod 4:
A sleeve boarc 25 is pivotally connected to the under surface of the ironing board 12.
If it is so desired, the cross or brace rod at may be utilized as a clothes rack for sup porting the ironed clothes, when the device is used as an ironing board.
in reducing the invention to practice, certain minor features of construction, com bination and arrangement of parts may necessitate alterations to which the patentee is entitled provided such alterations are comprehended within the scope of what is claimed.
What is claimed is In combination, a prop structure including a pair of closely related cross rods, a tread section, hooks carried by the upper end of the tread section for engagement with either of said rods, brace bars pivoted to the prop structure and to the tread section, a cross rod carried by the tread section adjacent the under side and near the front edge of the top tread, an ironing board, hooks secured to the inner end of the ironing board for engagement with said second named red, the location of this rod with respect to the top tread positioning the inner end of the ironing board in engagement with the front edge of the top tread, and a bracing leg having its upper .end hinged to the under side of the ironing'board and provided adjacent its lower end with a pair of relatively spaced shoulders for engagement with one of the lower treads, said closely related rods on the prop structure and the relatively spaced shoulders on the bracing leg permitting the ironing board to be supported at various distances from the floor, and said engagement between the inner end of the ironing board and the front edge of the top tread and the hooks preventing the ironing board from having any inward or outward movement during the .Olllllg operation.
In testimony whereof we aifix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
