Figure 1 is a side elevation of my device assembled with railway ties mounted thereon and shown in vertical transverse section;

Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of one end of the tie with the attaching means in position;
Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken upon line IVIV of Fig. 1;
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the bottom of an end portion of the tie with the attaching means removed; and
Fig. 6 is an inverted perspective view of a portion of one of the attaching plates employed with my form of tie.
My invention provides an elongated rectangular tie 10 having a longitudinal recess 11 in the bottom thereof and a longitudinal upwardly projecting seat portion 12 upon the top of the tie adapted for supporting railway rails 13 transversely positioned upon said seat accurately spaced apart the proper gage of the road.
A pair of attaching blocks 14 is provided for each end of the tie adapted for flatly positioning upon the seat 12 at opposite sides of the rails 13 and having finger pore tions '15 overlying the adjacent base -fla'n1ges 16 of said rails.
Three depending posts 17 are carried by each block .14 adapted to ;;project downwardly through transversely extending slots 18 in the tie '10. The tie and rail-securing means may be employed as a"temporary -track when quickly ."assembled in this manner but when the track is to be permanent, bolts 21 are upwardly inserted through the slots 18 at the sides of the posts 17 and extend through perforations 22 in the blocks 14 positioned adjacent the sa1d posts.
Heads 23 are provided for the bolts 21 seating within the recess 11 at the bottom of the tie 10 and overlying the slots 18, as illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawing; while nuts 24 are threaded upon the upper ends of said bolts bearing against the upper faces of the blocks 14. When the blocks 14 are secured against lateral movement by the bolts 21, the posts 17 are firmly locked within the slots 18 and the rails are retained in permanent track formation until the nuts 24 are released and the bolts 21 are removed permitting the blocks 14 to be readily disengaged from the rails 13 and detached from the tie 10.
What I claim as new is 1. A tie and rail fastener comprising a tie adapted for transversely mounting a rail thereon and having a plurality of transverse slots positioned at opposite sides of the railreceiving portion and with shoulders at corresponding ends of said slots, attaching blocks upon the tie having projecting fingers adapted for overlying the base flanges of a rail when in po lti n upon. said p rtion, de-
pending posts upon said blocks having projecting ribs at their free ends, the said posts and ribs being adapted for positioning through the main portion of said slots for engaging the ribs thereof beneath the said shoulders upon laterally sliding the said blocks, the bottom of said tie having a longitudinal recess surrounding the open lower ends of said slots, bolts upwardly projecting through said slots, blocks adjacent the said posts and provided with enlarged heads within said recess overlying the sides of said slots, and securing nuts upon the upper ends of said bolts engaging said blocks.
2. A device ,of the class described C01fl prising an elongated tie having a longitudinal recess in the bottom thereof and an" upwardly projecting rail seat upon the top of the tie, the said tie being provided with pairs of sets of transverse slots vertically extending therethrough adjacent the opposite ends of said. seat adapted for the posi tioning of rails between the slots of each set transversely of the seat, a rail-engaging block for each set of slots, U-shaped shoulders provided in said slots adjacent corresponding ends thereof, dependent posts upon said blocks adapted for vertical positioning through said slots and having projecting ribs upon their free ends adapted for underlying the said shoulders when the device is assembled with the blocks in their operaiasaeli tive positions upon the rail-seating portion of the tie.
3. A device of the class described com prising an elongated tie having a longitudinal recess in the bottom thereof and an upwardly projecting rail seat upon the top of the tie, the said tie being provided with pairs of sets of transverse slots vertically extending therethrough adjacent the opposite ends of said seat adapted for the positioning of rails between the slots of each set transversely of the seat, a rail-engaging block for each set of slots, U-shaped shoulders provided in said slots adjacent corresponding ends thereof, dependent posts upon said blocks adapted for vertical positioning through said slots and having projecting ribs upon their free ends adapted for underlying the said shoulders when the device is assembled with the blocks in their operative positions upon the rail-seating portion of the tie, the said blocks having perforations adjacent the said posts, bolts upwardly extending through the said perforations and slots at the opposite ends of the slots from said shoulders with heads overlying the lower ends of the slots and positioned within said recess, and securing nuts upon the upper ends of said bolts engaging the upper faces of the block's.
