. Be it known that I, CHARLES. ELSWORTH Es'rABRooK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Springport, in the county of Henry and State of Indiana, have in-.
vented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway-Ties and Rail-Fasteners, of whiclrthe following is'a specification.
My invention relates to railway ties and fasteners and contemplates certain new and useful improvements in railway ties and fasteners as embodied in my co-pending application Serial No. 401,710 filed August 6, 1920.
The purpose of my present invention is the provision of a railway tie and fastener of extremely simple, inexpensive and durable construction which is capable of being easily adjusted to support the rails of tracks of different gages, and which is so constructed as to be adaptable to various kinds of ballast, rail, and rolling stock, and which effectively secures the rails against lateral displacement.
I will describe one form of railway tie and fastener embodying my invention and will then point-out the novel features thereof in claim.

Figure 1 is a view showing in side elevation one form of railway tie and fastener, each embodying my invention.

Referring specifically to the drawings in which similar reference characters refer to similar parts, A designates two anchor members constructed of suitable metal and of any form to receive sufficient ballast to prevent movement thereof with relation to each other and to the track rails so as to provide an immovable support for the track rails. In the present instance I have shown the anchor members of substantially pyramidal form although it is to be understood that they may be of conoidal or semispherical form. The two anchor members are secured inproper spaced relation by means of a connecting bar C preferably formed of suitable metal and extending through slots provided in the anchor members so that the opposite ends of the bar projects from the anchor members. It is to be noted. that the inner keys or those keys arranged adjacent the confronting ends of-the rails supporting members are less in width than the width of the outer keys so that by an interchanging of the two the rail supporting members can be secured in different positions along the length of the connecting bar. The keys K are locked in position upon'the connecting bar by means of cotter pins 16.
Each anchor member A is adapted to support at its apex a track rail, and for looking the rail against lateral displacement, I provide a rail fastener which in the present instance comprises a projection 17 formed on the anchor member at a point intermediate the sides thereof and which projects above the apex of the member so as to engage the outer edge of the base of the rail. Adjacent the projection 17 the anchor member is formed with a recess 18 designed for the purpose of accommodating the threaded end of a bolt B carrying a nut 19 at its threaded end and a hook 20 at the opposite end. The bolt B is extended through. suitable openings formed in the anchor member and in such manner that its shank is disposed beneath the rail with the hooked end engaging the inner edge of' the base of the rail. A second recess 21 is provided in the anchor member upon the inner side of. the rail so as to accommodate the threaded end of another bolt B. This bolt extends beneath the base of the rail and through the anchor member with the hooked end engaging the outer edge of the rail base so that it will be seen that the second bolt is arranged in opposed relation with respect to the first bolt. By this arrangement the two bolts engage the opposite edges of the rail base to lockthe rail against lateral movement on the anchor member. The projection 17 being arranged upon the outerside of the rail and engaging its base obviously provides additionalomeans for preventing the outward lateral displacement of the rail, it being understood that the tendency of the rail to move outwardly is the greatest.

A railway tie comprising apair of hollow anchor members of" substantially pyramidal iorm adapted to support rails at the apex thereof, rail engaging projections formed on the anchor members at points intermediate the sides thereof so as to engage the outer edge of the rail base, recessed portions formed on the anchor members at opposite sides of the rails and projections, fastening members extending through the anchor members at the recessed: portions and adapted to engage the opposite edges of the rail bases, and means for adjustably connectingthe anchor members.
