MAY THOMPSON, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
HAIR-DRIER AND SUNSHADE.
Specification of Letters Patent Patented @1311 29, 1918,
Application filed July 1, 1918. Serial No. 242,781.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAY THoMrsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hair-Drlers and Sunsha-des, of which the following is a specification. I
My invention relates to hair drlers and sunshades and consists in the novel features herein shown, described and claimed.
The present invention is an alternative construction or modification of the construction shown in my companion application for hair driers, filed March 28, 1918, Serial Number 225,332.
Figure 1 is a perspective showlng a hair drier embodying the principles of my lnvention in use.
Fig. 2 is-a plan of the frame lying flat as it is cut from the material.
Fig. 3 is a perspective of the finished hair drier.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary plan of the connecting means shown in Fig. 3, parts being broken away and shown 1n section to illustrate the details of construction.
Fig. 5 is a view analogous to Fig. 3 and showlng a modified form of connecting means.
Fig. 6 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional detail on the line 6-6 of Fig. 5.
Fig. 7 is a plan view of modified form of my invention.
The frame 1 is cut from a sheet of good glazed cardboard or other stiff material and has a circular outer edge 2 and a circular central opening 3 eccentric to the outer edge 2; there being a slot 4 of considerable width extending from the opening 3 to the outer edge 2 and forming radial edges 5 and 6. Lacing eyelets 7 and 8 are formed near the edge 5 and mating eyelets 9 and 10 are formed near the edge 6. The frame thus constructed is dipped in warm par-aflin wax or other suitable waterproof material to form an inner coating 11 and an outer coating 12 of waterproof material. A lace 13 is threaded through the eyelets 7, 8, 9 and 10 to draw the edges 5 and 6 toward each other to the desired extent and then the lace is tied thereby forming a dished hair drier out of the flat frame.
The hair drier and sunshade thus constructed is placed in position, as shown in Fig. 1, with the hair extending upwardly through the-opening 3 and the crown of the head extending into the opening with the widest portion 14 extending forwardly from the upper part of the forehead over the eyes, so that the hair drier protects the face and neck from the sun and exposes the hair to the sun and air. The glazed surface of the cardboard or other stifi' material treated with paraflin wax or the like makes a smooth finish which is easily cleaned and which is waterproof.
In the modification shown in Figs. 5 and 6 elastic tapes 15 and 16 are placed across the slot 4 with the edges 5 and 6 near together, and the ends of the tapes are secured to the frame by staples 17, 18, 19 and 20. This form of connection makes the frame yielding to the extent that the tapes 15 and 16 will stretch.
A modified construction shown in Fig. 7 is made of a circular piece of cardboard or other stifi material 1 provided with an opening 3 eccentrically disposed therein. The cardboard or stiff material 1 may be waterproofed in the same manner as the other modifications of the invention. The
hair drier and sunshade is placed upon the head with the wide portion of the frame in front similar to the hair drier and sunshade illustrated in Fig. 1. The modification shown in Fig. 7 is made of one flat piece of material but the same may be shaped as those shown in Figs. 4 and 5.
Various changes may be made in the de tails of construction without departing from the spirit of my invention as claimed.
I claim:
1. A hair drier and sunshade comprising a frame cut from a sheet of cardboard and having a circular outer edge and a circular central opening eccentric to the outer edge; there being a slot of considerable width extending from the circular opening to the outer edge on radial line; a coating of paraffin wax applied to the frame, and means for drawing the edges formed by the slot together to dish the frame.
2. A hair drier and sunshade comprising a frame cut from a sheet of cardboard and having a circular outer edge and a central opening eccentric to the outer edge and a slot cut from the central opening to the outer edge on radial lines, and means for drawing the edges formed by the slot together.
3. A hair drier and sunshade com rising a frame out from a sheet of stiif .materlal and having a circular outer edge and a central opening eccentric to the outer edge and a slot cut from the central opening to the outer edge on radial lines and. having eye- 5 lets along the edges formed by the slot, and a lace in the eyelets for drawing the edges together.
4. A hair drier and sunshade comprising aeeeee a frame cut from a sheet of stifi material having a rounded outer edge and an opening 10 eccentric-ally disposed therein and a coating of paraffin applied to the frame.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
