To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. HELLER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Harrisburg, in the county of Dauphin and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Polishing Devices, of which the following isa specification. l
The invention seeks to provide, as its principal object, a floor polishing device comprising two clamping members adapted to hold strips of felt, so that the said strips may be conveniently and quickly changed end for end7 side for side, or any other suitable Vcombination that will permit the wear on the edges of the felt strips to be equalized, the device being designed to employ the edges of the strips to perform the `polishing function.
A further object of the invention is to provide two clamping members for the felt strips (which clamping members conveniently interconnect) and a further clamping member to which an adjustable handle is connected and which is adapted to straddle and to suitably engage the interconnecting clamping members in such a way as to cause them to securely hold the felt strips.
Astill further obj ect of the invention is to provide a neat and effective device of this vcharacter which is simple in construction,
durable in operation and inexpensivev to manufacture. v,
Other and furthervobjects will appear as the detail description of the device progrosses.
To the exact construction in which it is shown and described, the invention is not to be restricted. The continued practical use may make manifest certain desirable changes or alterations and the right is claimed to make any which do not deviate from the `scope of the subjoined claims.

Referring to the drawings, the device is shown as comprising two rectangular felt strips l and 2, the interconnecting clamping members `3 and Ll, the clamping member 5 and the handle 6. i
The clamping members 3 and 4 are designed to engage and hold the felt strips 1 and 2, they, themselves, being engaged and held in position by the clamping member 5. The clamping member 3 is essentially an angle plate, being L-shaped in cross section and having the lower edge of its longer leg bent back on itself, whereby a reinforced portion 7 is formed at the lower edge of the longer leg. lThe material of which the clamping member 3 is made is preferably sheet metal and in addition to being bent back on itself at the lower edge of the longer leg is crimped substantially at the vertical center of the said longer leg, thereby forming a rib 8 which extends throughout the length of the member 3. The clamping member 4 is the substantial equivalent of the clamping member 3, having the lower edge of its longer leg provided with the reinforced .portion 9 and further having a longitudinal rib 10. Both this reinforced portion 9 and rib 10 are formed in the identical way `that the reinforced vportion 7 and rib 8 are formed. The shorter leg of the L-shaped clamping member L is formed by bending the material (which is preferably sheet metal) of which the member is made back on itself and then reversing the bend, so that three thicknesses of metal comprise the shorter leg of the member, the two upper thicknesses being in spaced relation to each other to form a longitudinal groove 11 which extends through the length of the clamping member l and which receives the shorter leg of the clamping member 3 when the two members are` interconnected to secure the felt strips 1 and 2.
To hold the clamping members 3 and 4f and the attendant felt strips 1 and 2 together, there is provided a third clamping member 5 which is substantially U-shaped in cross section and which has ribs 12 formed longitudinally along its legs as the result of crimping the metal of which the member is made. The ribs 8, 10 and l2 being formed as the result of crimping the metal from which their respective clamping members are made, leave flutes on the reverse sides of the parts on which the ribs are formed.
The clamping member 5 has semi-circular recesses 13 formed at the ends of either of its legs, these recesses obtaining in the vicinity of the ribs 12. The clamping member 5 further ears lllpositioned on its top and substantially at its longitudinal center, the two ears being in spaced relation, so that they may receive between them the eye 15 of the socket 16, the eye being secured between the ears by means of a bolt 17 which passes through the eye and through appropriate holes formed in the ears. The head of the bolt 17 abuts one of the ears 111 on the outside and a wing nut 18 which screws onto the threaded end of the bolt abuts the other of the ears on the outside. The screwing of the wing nut 18 down against its attendant ear 14: serves to clamp the socket member 16 firmly in any desired position on the clamping member 5.
The socket 16 is adapted to receive one end of the handle 6 which is inserted in the socket and held therein by a suitable pin 19 which passes transversely through appropriate holes formed in the socket and in the handle, the pin being secured against loss by a chain 2() to one end of which it is attached. the other end of the chain being connected with the eye 21 that is secured to the socket.
The device is intended primarily as a means for polishing hardwood floors and the like, the felt strips 1 and 2 performing the polishing function. After these two strips have been placed between the interconnecting clamping members 3 and 4 and the clamping member 5 has been attached to the two latter, the strips 1 and 2 are firmly secured in and by the several clamping members, portions of the felt of which the strips 1 and 2 are made being squeezed in the iiutes resulting from the formation of the ribs 8 and 10 and these ribs 8 and 10 engaging in the flutes resulting from the formation of thepribs 12. Thus the two strips 1 and 2 'are firmly secured in the clamping members. When wear results on the exposed longitudinal corner of either of the strips 1 and 2, (the usual use of the device resulting in such wear) either of the strips may be turned end for end, thus bringing the worn edge of the reversed strip against the side of the strip which was not reversed. When the goed edge of the worn strip has become worn, the two strips together may then be changed end for end, thus bringing one of thc edges of the second strip into a position where it will b'e subjected to the greatest wear imposed upon the strips when the device is in use. In practice this wear is always on the lower exposed edge of that stri p which is nearer thehandle and the reversing of the strips to which reference was just made assumed that the strips were manipulated to bring a new edge on that side nearer the handle. For example: let it be assumed that the strip 2 as the result of continued use has been worn on its exposed vlongitudinal edge. This strip 2 may be then turned end for end, when the lower edge which originally adjoined the strip 1 then becomes the exposed edge of the strip 2. When this new edge has becomeV worn, the strips 1 and 2 may be turned end forsendfas a unit, thus bringing the exposed edge of the strip 1 into a position where it is subjected to the greatest wear. This edge of the strip 1 having become worn, the strip 1 may then be turned end for end to expose a new edge, as the strip 2 was turned. It will thus be observed that the strips 1 and 2 may be manipulated to equalize the wear on them and thus insure for them the most efficient performance of their functions.
The recesses 13 on the ends of the cla-mping member 5 provide means for readily disengaging the interconecting clamping members 3 and 4 froln the clamping member 5, it being only necessary to compress the clamping members 3 and 4 between the fingers, the recesses 13 providing space to enable the fingers to grasp the clamping members 3 and 4- which may, of course, be compressed against the pressure of the felt strips held between them.
The wing nut 18 and its attendant bolt 17 provide means for giving the handle 6 dierent angles of inclination with respect t0 the clamping members and their attendant felt strips, the handle, by this means, being capable of being set to any angular positions between horizontal and the vertical..
The pin 19 affords means for disconnect ing the handle from the device when the latter is not in use, it being only necessary to withdraw the pin in order to remove the handle from the socket 16.
A distinct advantage results from having the handle `6 angularly adjustable, since the strips 1 and 2 may always be kept vertical (so that their polishing edges will be presented to the surface to be polished) irrespective of the angle at which it is necessary to hold the handle.
The invention having been described, what is claimed as new and useful is:
In a polishing device, a plurality of polishing strips, a pair of L-shaped clamping members engaging the strips and securing them one against the other for substantially the full width of their facing sides, one of said lL shaped clamping members being formed with a groove in one of its legs, the said groove extending longitudinally along the clamping member, and detachably receiving one leg of the other clamping inember, and aU-shaped clamping member straddling the two L-shaped clamping members and securing them and the strips together.
