SAMUEL G. GILLESPIE, OF CHARLESTON, WEST VIRGINIA.
WATER-BASIN STOPPLE.
Application filed August 6, 1918.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that SAMUEL G. (iinmzsrin, a citizen of the, United States, residing at (harlestom in the county of Knnawhn and State of Vest Virginia, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in lValer-lhvsin Stopples, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a stopple par ticularly applicable to the outlets or drains of plumbing fixtures such as wash basins.
One general aim is to provide the siopple of metal so as to be free from interstices like rubber, especially after continued use which clog with foreign matter and become unsanitary, and so as to be at all times capable of cleaning for sanitation.
Another object is to provide the specific construction hereinafter described, especially having novel manipulation and fastoning means.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating the present preferred embodiment;
Figure 1 is a vertical section through the improvements and an outlet member with which it is associated; Fig. 2 is a side elevation at a rightangle to Fig. 1 of the improved device; Fig. 3 is a bottom view of the parts of Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a Crosssectional view on the line 4 of Fig. 2.
Referring specifically to the drawings, a water outlet pipe member of usual form for stationary basins is shown at A having. a flange B to overlap the basin, an inlet C for overflow water and a cross guard or trap bars 1). Disclosure of this part will facilitate an understanding of the improvements.
The improvements constitute two parts, namely a stopple E and a fastening- F therefor. Said stopple E is of suitable metal, having a disk 5, preferably thin, to rest on the flange B and form a water seal therewith, and an annular wall 6 integral with or separate from the disk as desired and clepending therefrom.
Fastening F is preferablv made in a single strand of flexible metallic wire intermediate its ends being formed into a fingcn or manipulating loop 7, and into side arm 8 which extend through and are soldered or otherwise fastened to the disk 5.

Serial No. 248,541.
vertical movement of the device and also extend below and on opposite sides of each f the bars l terminating in lugs t prefernbl v in continuous relation. extending in opposite directions and underlapping the bars D. .\l 10, the side arms are prefcrablv inclined upwardly and outwardly from lugs 5).
In attaching the improvennmt to the [ixturc. linger of the operator or :1 tool may be interposed between the arms 9 to spread them so they will slip past the bars l whereupon the arms will spring: inw-irdlv to the normal position shown in the drawings, so that lugs 9 will underlap bars D. To remove the device the acti n is the rc verse. in both attaching and removing the article inclined positions 10 will be found advantageous as the finger or tool by movement between the arms toward the lugs 9 will wedge or spread the fllllls' F4 so that the. lugs may be moved past the bars I).
As merely one einl'iodiment has been shown. it is understood that l may make such changes as fall within the spirit and scope thereof.
l. A device of the class described having a slopple. a fastening device of a single strand of flexible material passing through the stopplc at two locations, to thus form a loop on one side and side arms on the other side. and means extending from the arms to engage and prevent detachment from a fixture.
2. A device of the class described having: a stopplc. a Wire bent intermediate the ends having arms passing therethrough and fastoned thereto and having; :1 manipulating loop on one side, said armsextending below the other face and having portions extendinn inwardlv and downwardlv to facilitate spreading: of the arms. and lugs at the ends of the arms extending in opposite directions.
in testimony whereof T :dlix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
SAMUEL G. GTLTIESPIE Vitnesses J. G. GRYMES, WILLIAM GRANT.
