Description
(No Model @.FORTH. SEWER TRAP. A No. 417.636. Patented Deo. 17, 1889.
WMQULM/ v 3 5 pipe enters the bowl.
`UNITED STATES lPATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES FORTH, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
SEWER-TRAP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 417,636, dated December 17, 1889.
Application filed September 2l, 1889. Serial No. 324,694. (No model.)
T all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES FORTH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sewer-Traps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eX- act description of the same, such as will enable lothers skilled in the art to which it appertains 1o to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improved forni of sewer-trap, and its objects are, first, to provide a simple, eifective, and accessible form of trap which will prevent the escape of I5 gas from the pipe 5 second, to provide means zo justment and for repairs.
My invention consists of the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and more particularly pointed out in the 2 5 claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figurel lis a section of a sink provided with my iinproved trap, also in central vertical section. `Fig. 2 is a detail of the cap covering` the end 3o of pipe.
In the figures, A represents a globular or pear-shaped depression in the basin a, which receives the vertical end of the sewer-pipe B. b is a watertight joint, formed where the The end of the pipe B extends to near the upper end of the depression A, and is provided with slots or openings b at its upper end. A cylindrical cap O is placed over the open end of the pipe B,
4o closing the mouth, but large enough to leave an annular space Cf around the pipe. Lugs, as C2, integral with the cap fit within the pipe B, of sufficient width to cover the opening b in the pipe B. A rib O3, in the top of the cap O, serves 4to turn the cap so that the lugs 5o rib C3 is turned by han d until the lugs C2 cease to cover the slots b', when the water will enter the annular space C and flow into the pipe;
but on turning the cap so as to recover the slots the water will be retained in the basin. Vhen all the water has been drawn from the basin, enough will be left in the depression A and annular space O to prevent the escape of gas and make an efficient seal.
The meeting surfaces of the cap and pipe may be re-enforced with rubber or other flexible packing, if desired, so as to be air-tight, and a lug or pin, as b2, may be used to stop the cap C. A ring, as D, may be used to turn the cap O, through the sieve E.
` The advantages of this device are obvious on account of the extreme simplicity of the working parts and their ready accessibility when the trap becomes fouled and needs cleaning. It will also be evident that when any part wears it can readilybe replaced without removing the trap.
I do not claim as my invention the specific form, precise construction, or arrangement of the various parts of my device. Such limitations are not of the spirit of my invention; but
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a sewer-trap, a basin having a depressed portion, a vertical pipe extending through the depressed portion of the basin, a cylindrical cap covering the upper opening of said pipe, and forming an annular space around the projecting part of the pipe, in combination with openings in the upper extremity of the pipe vand means for covering or uncovering these openings, consisting of lugs depending from the cap and integral with the same, substantially as and for the purpose set -forth.
2. In a sewer-trap, a'basin having a de- Y pressed portion, a vertical pipe extending through the depressed portion of the basin, a cylindrical cap covering the upper opening of said pipe and forming an annular space around the projecting part of the pipe, in combination with openings in the upper eX- tremity of the pipe and means for covering or uncovering these openings, consisting of lugs depending from the cap and integral therewith, and a perforated disk covering the opening in the bottom of the basin, with a lug integral with cap and extending vertically through said disk into the basin, all
