To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, ANTHONY. McLEAN and FINDLAY CUMMING, both of the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented an Improvement in Filters; and we hereby declare the following .to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
Our invention relates to a filter to be attached to ordinary pipes or faucets for the purpose of cleaning water to be used for household or other purposes fronrthe larger and heavier impurities.
Our present invention consists of a means for readily cleaning the exterior of the cylindrical filtering column which is employed in our device; and it consists of a band or seriesof bands suitably united surrounding the filtering-column, which it fits sufficient to rub upon the outside, and is provided with a rodor handle by which it maybe moved up or down whenever it is desired to cleanse the surface.
Referring to the accompanying drawings for a more complete explanation of our invention, Figure 1 is a View of our device. Fig. 2 is a view showing the filtering-column, surrounding bands, and operating wire or handle.
The main features of our invention are similar to those shown in a former application for a patent, which was allowed to us June '16, 1886.
It consists of a metallic perforated base or bottom, A, through which the water discharges, a cylindrical column, B, of filtering material extending upward from the central portion of this base, an exterior transparent cup or covering, 0, and a .means for attaching the device to the faucet or other watersupply, so that water will enter the outside of the casing and pass thence through the filtering-column to the discharge-opening in the base. After this apparatus has been in use a short time the dirt or other impurities will collect upon the outside of the screen or filtering-column and so'obstruct it that there will be very little flow of water. In order to overcome this difficult-y,we fit a ring or rings, E, around the column, sothat when moved lengthwise they will move su'tticiently easy and at the same time will rub upon the surface so as to detach any dirt or impurities which may. cling thereto. In the present case we have shown three narrow bands connected together at one side and having a wire or rod attached to this side and extending through a k slot or opening in the lower part of the cylindrical screen, which slot is closed by the plate or side to which the bands are united. The wire is bent at right angles, extending downward through the dischargeopening, and may either hang directly in the opening or the discharge-nozzle may be slotted and the wire bent at right angles, as shown at G, so as to extend out to one side of the outflowing stream of water. By taking hold of this wire the bands may be moved up and down upon the filteringcolumn, so as to cleanse it of impurities, and. the dirt will be discharged through the lower part of the slot or opening F at the bottom of the filteringcolumn, which opening will be exposed and opened when the device is pushed upward on the column.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A filter composed of the exterior casing and a base having a central discharge-opening, with a standard or column projecting upward from this opening within the case and provided with filtering material, and an opening in the top of the case through which the water passes into it around the filtering-column, in combination with the rings E, fitting said column, and an attachment for moving them up and down upon the same, substantially as herein described. The exterior case into which water may be admitted from the faucet or other source of supply, the base having a central dischargeopening, and a filteringcolumn surrounding said opening and extending upward within the exterior case, as shown, in combination with rings fitted and vertically sliding upon said column, and.a rod connected therewith and extending downward, so .thatthe rings may be operated from the outside, substantially as herein described.
