Be it known that I, CHARLES I. Gonn- BLATT, a citizen of Russia, residing at New York city, in the gounty of'New York, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Self-Cleaning Filters: and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the artto which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention is directed to improvements in self-cleaning filters, and has for its object to provide a device of this character which can be readily attached to a faucet to filter the water as it flows therefrom.
A further'object of the invention is to provide a filter constructed in such a manner that the flow of water therethrough can be directed laterally, when desired to remove sediment from the filter.
With these and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formation, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is side elevation of the device. Fig. 2 is a vertical central sectional view through the device, showing the valve plate in its open position. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 33 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing 1 indicates a cylindrical circular casing, said casing hav= ing its upper "end provided with a coupling 2 to facilitate the attaching of the casing to a faucet, said coupling being of any conventional'form. The lower end of the easing 1 is filled with filtering material 3, which may be of any Well known substance. Resting on the upper surface of the filtering material is a screen 4, said screen serving to prevent sediment from entering the filterwater to freely pass therethrough. An outlet pipe -5 communicates with the interior of the casing 1 and at a point above the plane of the screen 4, the purpose of which will appear later; A by-passfi has its lower end communicating with the interior of the casing 1 directly opposite the outlet pipe 5.

What is claimed is I 1. A filter of the class described compristhereof.
