2 SHEETS-SHEET 2 PETER MAZIARZ, F FAWTUCKET, RHODE ISLAND.
WIRE-CUTTING WEAPON.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER MAZIARZ, a subject of the Emperor of Austria, residing at Pawtucket, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wire- Cutting Weapons, of which the following is a specification.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a wire cutter that is compact in formpositioned substantially inclosed within the handle of a knife or swordand readily operable for severing wires whenever desired. a i
A further object of the invention is the provision of a wire cutter carried by a sword handle and normally closed within the handle, the same being adapted for automatic positioning ready for use in cutting wires when the device is released by theoperator.
. a A still further object of the invention is to provide means for cutting barbed and similar wires such as wire entanglements upon the line of march, the device being compactly carried by the handle of a cutting blade without interfering. with the or.- dinary use of the blade or adding-materially to the weight of the weapon.
With these general objects in view the device will be fully described in connection with the accompanying drawings and in which like designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views. r r
In the drawings,
Figure 1 is a central longitudinal sectional view of the device with the blade broken away with the device in its open position; i i
Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same with the device closed;
Fig. 3 is an elevational view of one side of the device;
Fig. 4 is a similar view of the opposite side of the same;
gig. 5 is an end view of the device open; an
Figs. 6 and 7 are transverse sectional views taken upon lines VI-.-VI and VIIVII respectively of Fig. 1.
It will be understood that my wire cutter is adapted for employment with the handle or shank of any form of blade such as a bayonet or sword and the same is herein set Specification of Letters Patent.

forth by way of illustration installed upon the handle-10 of a two-edged blade 11. The handle 10 has an internal chamber 12 open at one side of the handle in the form of a longitudinal slot 13 while the blade 11 is secured in a socketli in one end 15 of the handle for projecting in longitudinal alinement therewith by means of rivets 16.
An ofl'set 17 laterally projects from the handle end 15 provided with a recess 18 adapted to receive a cutting block 19 having a shank 20 slidably mounted in a passage- Iway 21 longitudinally of the handle 10 adjacent the closed side of the chamber 12. A
.spring 22 is positioned within said chamber having one end seated in a pocket '23 adjacent the butt end 2t of the handle 10 while the other end of said spring is mounted upon a lug 25 at the inner end of the shank 20. The spring 22 is adapted to force the block 19 out ofthe recess 18 while one side of the recess is provided with a sharpened edge 26 adapted for severing wires positioned between the blockv 19 and offset 17 during the closing or seating of the block within said recess 18.
oted by means of a slot 38 in the said plate .upon a pin 34 carried by the shank transversely of the slot35.
When the shank 20 is projected with-the block 19 in its open position, the lever 27 extends obliquely from the handle 10 as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings. Upon forcing said lever 27 toward the handle 10 and inwardly of the slot 13, the shank 20 is retracted and the block 19 forced inwardly of the recess 18 cutting any wires which have been positioned upon the offset 17'at the end 15 of the handle. A latch hook36 is pivoted within the chamber 12 havingits inturned end 37 normally positioned by means of a spring 38 in the closing path of movement of the notched free end 9 .cfrthe lev r. 2.7 Upon cl s ng the said lever inwardly of the slot 13, the hook 87 of the latch engages the notch 39, thereby retaining the device closed with the block 19 in the recess 18. A releasing plungeii0 slidably extends through the butt 2% of the handle 10 pivoted within the chamber 12 of the latch 36 and provided with a but ton 41, upon its outer end and whereby upon inwardly pressing the button -11, the latch 36 is released from the lever 37 and the spring 32 automatically swings said lever to its open posltlon with the shank 20 prothe operator for wielding the blade 11 while the offset 17 and a projecting lip 44 at the opposite side of the handle end 15 serve as a manner of pommel or guard during such use of the device. The block 19 is instantly opened automatically ready for use by means of the spring 22 when the button 41 is pressed inwardly and the wire cutting at.- tachment may be employed with many dif- .ferent forms of knives and cutters.
