To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnrn S'mNIsLAwsnI, a citizen of the United States of America, residing atHammond, in the county of Lake and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wire-(dutting Attachments for Bayonets, of which the following is a specification.
The primary object of the invention is the provislonof a Wire-cutter adapted for employment upon a bayonet or other blade for cutting Wire such as a barbed Wire barrier or entanglement, the device being substantiallyincased in the blade ready for operative adjustment for immediate use Whenever required.
A further object of the invention is to provide an eiiicient Wire-cutter employed upon a blade without materially adding to the size or Weight of the blade and so arranged that its presence will be unnoticed by casual observer and the usefulness of the blade Will not be impaired.
A still further object of the device is to provide a Wire-cutter for a bayonet adapted to be normally arranged in an inoperative position for preventing the cutter from accidentally engaging otherobjectsbut being readily positioned in. its operative arrangement for quickly cutting wires and similar articles.
In the drawing Figure l is a side elevation of a bayonet arranged with my device shown in its inoperative osition, a cover-plate for the mechanism being removed;

Referring more in detail to the drawing. a bayonet 10 is herein illustrated arranged. with my form. of wire-cutter carried by the shank or base 11 of the bayonet adjacent the blade 12 thereof.
A chamber 13 is formed in the shank 11. adapted for housing the cutter mechanism While a. cover slate IL-i forming one side per t-ion oil the shank ii is normaily arranged. over the said chamber. A rocl block 15 substantially hearhshaped in form is pivoted upon a transverse pin l6 within the chamber 13 and having a slot 1? in the top edge 18 thereof, it being undersirmd that said edge 18-n1ay be positioned in substantiaily the same plane as the adjacent edge 19 of the shank 11.
A curved cutter or knife :20 is pivoted as at Zl to one corner ofthe block 15 arranged for s'winging movement within the slot 17' somewhat after the nature of a pocket-knife structure. An opening 22 is arranged for the chamber 13- in the edge 19 of the shank and the knife 20 is adapted for swinging through the said opening from its closed position as shown in Fig. 1. of the drawing to its open arrangement as illustrated in Fig. 2 thereof. within the chamber 1 3 by means of an angleiron 24. with the free end of the spring in constant contact with a projecting a m 25 carried by the block 15..
A curved abutment 26 is provided upon the shank edge 19 overlying a portion of the A leaf-spring 23 is anchored i eeopening 522 and having a head 27 overlying the cutter 20 provided with a slot 28 within which the djacent outer curved edge of the cutter 0 is adapted to engage when the device is oga-iratively arranged. The cutter 20 has a heel 30 normally engaging the bot torn portion 31 of the abutment 26 for slid ing movement thereon. during the shifting of the cutter 20.

While the engagement of the thereof cut away at 34 at one side of the readily released from the notch 38 by moving'the same slightly inwardly, it being understood that the spring 23 maintains the cutter-20 in its engagement with the notch 38 by reason of the fact that the portion of the spring bearing upon the block 15 tends to shift the blade 20 toward the notch 28 while the heel 30 engages the abutment face 31.? When the device is inoperative as illustrated in Fig. 1, the same is substantially concealed from view but is readily shifted -1by engaging the knob 36 for positioning the cutter 20iready for use in cutting wires.
What I claim as new is 1. In combination with abayonet having a chamber, pivotally connected cutters pivotally mounted within the chamber, resilient means adapted for normally positioning one of the cutter members exteriorly of the chamber, and an abutment overlying the said last-named cutter member for engagem'ent therewith during the movement of the cutter members toward each other in the cutting operation.
2. In combination with a bayonet having a shank formed with a chamber with a side opening for the chamber, a block pivoted in said chamber having a slot upon one side thereof and with a cutting edge formed upon the portion of the block on one side of the slot, and a knife pivoted to said block having a sharpened edge adapted for cooperating with the aforementioned cutting edge in the cuttin operation.
3. n combination with a bayonethaving a shank formed with a chambe with a side opening for the chamber, a block pivoted in said chamber having a slot upon one side thereof and with a cutting edge formed upon the portion of the block on one side of the s1ot,'a knife pivoted to said block having a sharpened edge for cooperating with the chamber whereby the knife is shifted 1 l n into seating reception within said slot during the traversing of said cutting portions when the device is in operation.
4. In combination with a bayonet having a shank formed with a chamber with a side opening for the chamber, a block pivoted in said chamberhaving a slot upon one side thereof and with a cutting edge formed upon the portion ofthe block on one side of the slot, a knife pivoted to said block having a sharpened edge for cooperating with the aforementioned cutting edge in the cutting operation resilient means engaging the said block adapted for normally maintaining the knife projected through the said opening, an abutment upon the shank in contact with the adjacent side of the knife during the retraction of the knife within the chamber whereby the knife is shifted into seating reception Within said slot during the traversing of said cutting portions when the device is in operation, the shank bein arranged with a keeper notch at the front end of the chamber adapted for receiving the free end of the knife in its inoperative position, a hand hold knob upon the outer edge of the knife, and a heel at the opposite end of the knife adapted for slidably engaging the bottom of said abutment during the shifting of the block.
