p Soissons-Barona.
To all whomfit may concern:
\ subject of the Emperor of Austria, residing at Lansing, in the county of Ingham and State of Michigan, have invented certain new a and useful Improvements in Scissors- Bayonets, of which the following is a'specication. l The primary object of this invention is -the provision of an attachment forrifles adaptable. as a bayonet and serviceable in cutting wires such as are employed to form barriers or entanglements.
A furtherobject-of the device is toprovide al bayonet attachment havingV a cutting memberin the 'form of scissors readily i operable by the soldier carrying the gun for cutting wires or the like and adapted for inoperative positioning when not in use.
A -still furtherobject of the device isf Vthe provisionof a combined bayonet and scissors attachment for guns, the device having a cutting member adapted to be latched in its closedposition when not in use and `V resiliently maintained open when positioned In the drawing forming part of this application and in which like designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views, j Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device mounted upon the end portion of a gun barrel Vand with the bayonet and pull cord broken away.
` Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof, and
Fig. 3 is a similar View of a portion thereof with thecutting member closed.
My device is herein illustrated in connection with the barrel of a gun or rifle and includes an attaching shank 1l provided with mounting collars 12 forv retaining the device upon' the gun barrelby means of clamping bolts 13, a bayonet 14, diamondj shaped in cross section, being formed'integral `with the shank 11. Y
A block 15 is provided at the point of i attachment between the bayonet 14, shank 11 and outer collar 12, having spaced parallel ears `16 between which a scissors blade 17` is pivoted by means of a pin 18. The said blade has a sharpened inner edge 18 for engaging the adjacent edge 19 of the bayonet 14, an elongated handle 20 being carried by the said .blade 17 operable by pull cord 21 to be held in the hand of the soldier. carrying .the gun for readily contacting the Specification of Letters Patent.

\ A positioning spring 22 is secured at-one end, as at 23, to anotfset portionY`2-tof the shank 11, the inner end of said spring having a U-shaped bearing 25 slidably receiving the handle 20 therein. A struck-out portion 26 of the spring 22 forms an auxiliary spring bearing against the offset portion 24 of the-shank 11 for imparting a lateral imj pulse tothe handle,` 20,whiohhandle is nor- Y mally held with `the scissors open by means of the spring 22. j
A latch 27is swingingly carried bythe inner end of the shank 11 adapted for positioning in a slot 28 at'the free end ofthe handle 20, a `crossfpin 29 carried by said latch being adapted for seating'within sockets 30 in the slotted portion of said handle. When lthe handle 20 is moved adjacent the shank 11 and the spring 22 thereby compressed, the latch 27 is engaged with the pin 29t-hereof seated within the sockets 30 and the auxiliary spring member 26 tending to separate the shank 11 and handle 2() laterallymaintains ltheV latch in place with the scissorsmember in its closed position. Upon releasing the latch 27, the spring 22 forcibly moves the handle 20 away from the shank 11 with thel blades 18 and 19 separated and the scissors member in its open position ready for use in cutting wires or other articles by pulling upon the cord 21. A service able attachment `for guns is provided in which a scissors member is combined with the bayonet detachably carried by the gun in such a manner asto add very little weight `of the bayonet with a cutting edge adapted to coperate with the adjacent edge of the bayonet during a cutting operation, resilient means slidably engaging said cutting member for normally maintaining the same in The wire cutter may bel its open arrangement, an operating pull cord` for the said cutting member, a swinging latch upon said shank adapted for maintaining the cutting member in its closed position, the said resilient means having an auxiliary spring portion adapted for laterally separating the said shank and cutting 2; 'in' combination withffalgn bareL-a 'Y the {point of connection between f ,theA said *devccisclQSedn. i.
