Description

JAMES WINEGANER.
Improvement in Gates.
Patented June 25,1872.
JAMES WINEGANER, OF GRATIOT, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN GATES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 128,269, dated June 25, 187-2.
, ments in Farm-Gates, which relate to that class of farmgates which are capable of being opened and closed by the occupant of a vehicle without dismounting for that purpose; and
it consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter more fully described and pointed out by the claims; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, with letters of reference marked thereon, forming a part of this specification, the figure of which represents a perspective view of a device embodying my invention.
B B, a a, and I) represent a gate of the usual construction, which is attached to the gate-post A by hinges K K to allow the gate to swing either way, as may be desired. 0 0 represent ground-posts, situated on each side of and at suitable distance from the post A, and having tenons ff at the top of each to receive corresponding mortises in the caps D D. F F represent levers bent in the form shown and pivoted to the under side of the caps D'D, said levers being bent at one end for the purpose of attaching the cords N. N, and bent in hoolcform at the other end to receive one end of the straight bars E E, the other ends of said bars being pivoted at e upon the slotted arm J, which is pivoted to the top of post A. H represents a crank-lever, which is pivoted in and between the bars a a of the gate. The upper end of said lever passes through the bar a of the gate and through the slot d in the arm J, and having a head, I, as shown. 0 represents a rod, one end of which is secured to the crank portion of the lever H, and the other passes through a perforation in the upright bar or post B, and is secured to the spring G, said spring being secured in a suitable manner to the bar a and bent in the form shown. M represents a" plate secured to the inside of the post A, and having a notch in its face to receive the spring Gr, so that the spring and plate will serve to lock the gate when the same is closed.
The operation of my invention is as follows: Upon driving up to the gate from either side within reach of one of the cords the operator should pull down upon the cord, which will, through the medium of the mechanism above described, release the spring from the plate and open the gate, and at the same time draw up the cord on the opposite side of the gate, which should be in turn pulled down after driving through, which will close the gate, and the same will be automatically locked by the elasticity of the spring.
A cheap device is thus afforded, easily constructed, simple and reliable in operation, and not liable to get out of order.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the cords'N N, levers F F, supports A G C, bars E E, and pivoted arm J with a gate, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The crank-lever H, in combination with the pivoted and slotted arm J, rod 0, spring Gr, plate M, and a swinging gate, substantially as and for the purpose specified. 1
3. The cords N N, levers F F, bars E E, pivoted slotted arm J, and supports A O C, in combination with the crank-lever H, rod 0, spring G, and plate M, when the parts are arranged as shown, and for the purpose described.
Intestimony whereof Ihave hereunto signed my name this 5th day of April, A. D. 1872, in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES WINEGANER.
