To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MARVIN G. THOMAS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Graybull, in the county of Big Horn and State of Wyoming, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tug-Attaching Devices, of which the following is a specification.

My present invention relates to a new and improved tug attaching device and the prin cipal object thereof is to provide a device of the above nature which may be easily and quickly attached or detached to or from the whiftle-tree and thus providing for quick substitution in the event that the same should become broken.

Another object of this invention is to provide an improved tug attaching device which includes a link for attachment with the tug, the said link being removably attached to the body of my invention so that it may be easily and quickly removed or arranged in position.

A further object is to provide a device of the above character, wherein the attaching link is normally held in a secure position so that wabbling of the same is materially prevented thus obviating unnecessary wear thereon and at the same time, greatly adding to the efficiency of the invention.

A still further object is to provide a device of the type in question that is extremely simple in construction and which it is believed can be manufactured at a comparatively low cost.

The above and other objects which will become apparent, are accomplished by such means as are shown in their preferred form in the accompanying drawings, described in the following specification and then more specifically pointed out in the appended claim.

In the accompanying drawings wherein like characters designate like parts throughout the several views;

Figure 1 is a sectional view of my invention illustrating parts thereof in elevation.

Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the body portion showing the connecting link in elevation.

In the drawings I have shown my invention in its preferred embodiment and the numeral 10 designates the body portion thereof from which project extensions 11. In order tofacilitate the attachment to the trace, the said extensions 11 carry a fastening member 12 of the usual construction.

The body portion 10 is cut out as at 13 at a point intermediate its ends, the said cut-out forming a pair of shoulders 14: that are slightly below the adjacent surfaces of the body 10. A plate 15 is provided that normally seats on the said shoulders, and is preferably flush with the adjacent surfaces of the body 10 and is secured in place by a removable fastening member 16. The fastening member 16 extends through the cutout 13, and forms means for retaining the connecting link 17. Thus it will be understood that, when the connecting link 17 is arranged within the said cut-out, it will be securely held in position, by the co-action of the plate 15 and the adjacent portion of the body 10, and its removel will also be 4 prevented by the fastening member 16.

When the whifie-tree is attached to the link 17 the said link will bear against the member 16 and distribute the stress subjected thereto uniformly throughout the body 10 and the plate 15. In the event that the link 17 should become worn or otherwise defaced, the plate 15 may be easily and quickly removed and a new link substituted.

From the above it will be appreciated that my invention is exceedingly simple in construction whereby it may be manufactured at a comparatively low cost; and as the advantages and novel features will be readily understood, further description is deemed unnecessary.

In reducing my invention to practice I find that the form referred to herein as the most practical and preferred embodiment is the most eflicient, but realizing that certain conditions will necessarily vary in concurrencewith the adoption of my device, I desire to emphasize the fact that various minor changes in the details of construction and in the proportion of parts may be resorted to when required without sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention as defined in the appended claim.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A. tug attaching device, comprising an elongated member having a portion removed from a side forming a recess, and having said recess. enlarged at its open side to form shoulders at the ends thereof, said member having spaced extensions beyond the recess a fastening supported in the spaced extensions parallel With the member, a plate closing the open side of the said recess and having its ends engaging the shoulders at the ends of the recess and supported thereby,

and an element passing centrally through 7 the plate, reoess-and member andsecuring 10 the plate to the member and adapted to re tain a part in the recess.
