have invented certain new and useful Imlprovements-in Igniter-Torches; and we do ereby declare that the following is a full,
clear, and exact description. thereof. Our invention refers to gas lighters commQn to a-series of burners grouped thereabout and particularly to that type described in a patent-issued to J. F. Rutz and J. K. Luethe'November 21, 1911, for igmter torches, No. 1,009,184.
The object of our present inventlon is to increase the efiiciency and to simplify the construction of'the igniter torch referred to in its various details, whereby the cost of manufacture is reduced and its utility and durability isincreased. I
-The specific objects of our inventlon are to provide a pilot-light supplystube that is entirely incased within the torchsupplytube, whereby thesaid pilot-supply tube isprotected, with the exception of the tip or nozzle end, which end extends through its torch-tube,-' the' same being bent upwardly-to the desired position for igniting the main as supply that is discharged from the torchiead, and to provide an incasin boil for the torch-head and pilot nozzle t at 1s entirely detached from said head, the bell being provided with a retaining s ider "(that engag'esa portion ofthe head an a key or saddle recess, which recess is adapted to straddle the shank of the torch-head, where by the bell iskeyed in a position relativ'eto said torch-head to automatically permlt registration of a series. of torch-head apertures and firing portsin the bell. By this arrangement the bell is capable of bemg removed for convenience in cleaning the several parts, which parts have, been found in practice to be subject to carbon or sooty deposits.
With the above objects in view the Invention consists in certain. peculiarities of construction and combination of parts as hereinafter set forth with reference to the accompanying drawings and subsequently claimed.

' Referring by characters to the drawings, 1 represents a gas supply pipe for. feeding of gas to a series of burners, notshown, to which pipe is connected 'the torch supply tube 2 through the medium of a controllm valve 3'. "The valve is incased in a' shell 3 which shell is .formed with a by-pass 4, the
same extending through the shell and in communication with the supply-pipe. The by-pass 4 is under control of a regulating screw-plug 5, whereby the flow of as is restricted or increased as desired. T e mouth of the by-pas's channel that extends into the torch supply-tube 2 is threaded for the reception of one end of a pilot-tube 6, which tube, in assemblage, isinserted through the outer 0 en end ofthe torch su ply-tube 2, the sai pilot-tubebeing-"initially straight from end to end. The pilot-tube 6. also passes through an aperture in an elbow 7,
which elbow constitutes the shank portionof a torch-head. That branch of the elbow 7, which isalined with the-tube opening, is threaded for engagement with the correspondingly threaded open end of the torch supply-tube 2, it being understood that the elbow is first slipped overthe outer end of the pilot supply tube 2, which tube passes beyond the elbow.

thereto a thimble 8, which thimble carries a tip 9 at its discharge end, the same bein provided with a series of radially dispose gas-discharge apertures 9 to complete the torch-head. The tip is also provided with a leak aperture 10 that is employed for the purpose of permitting a small flow of gas under the radially disposed discharge apertures 9' and between a pair of the same, but upon a lower plane. To complete the igniter torch the open extended end of the pilot supply tube 6 is bent u wardly inap roximate alinement with t e torch thim 1e to the aperture in the elbow or shank of the torch-head, we preferably calk thepro form apilot nozzle 6, the mouth of which nozzle is positioned adjacent to the leak aperture 10, whereby escaping gas therefrom will be ignited.
In order to prevent leakage around the pilot supply-tube 6 where it passes through portion a semi-circular key recess 14:, which recess is arranged to straddle the horizontal branch of the elbow 7 that constitutes the shankof the torch-head. The bell 12 is also pro-v vided with a centrally apertured retaining spider 15, the aperture of which is fitted over the thimble 8 of the torch-head and one face of the spider is adapted to rest upon the uppenjuxtaposed end face of the-vertical branch of the elbow, it being understood" that the pilot nozzle 6 extends between arms of the spider and above the same. Hence it' is apparent 'fromthe foregoing description that the removable bell. is so keyed that it is impossible to insertthe same over the torch and pilot-light without properly alining the'firmg holes with thetorch tip discharge apertures.
It is also manifest that the pilot supplytube 6 is entirely incased within the torch supply tube 2 and protected, with the exception of the projecting ilot, nozzle, whichnozzle, owing to its close y nested position relative to the torch-head, is not liable to damage. Furthermore this construction renders the device self-contained and compact, a desirable feature in shipment. 1
It is also ap arent that the tip apertures and mouth of t e pilot nozzle 6- can readily be cleaned, if choked, by removal of the bell, the dome of which bell can also be cleansed of any sooty or carbon deposits, which deposits are due to foreign uses 7 and spent products of combustion. A ter the parts are all thoroughly cleaned it will be observed that the bell-is so keyed that it isimpossible for the housewife or other unskilled operator to replace the same other than in a correct positionrelative to the torch head and firing ports.

We claim:
1. In an igniter torch having a supply tube provided with an upturned elbow, and
a thimble in threaded union with the vertical leg of the elbow, the thimble being provided with a firing tip; the combination of aremovable bell having firing ports, the lower edge of said bell being provided with a semi-circular key recess adapted to straddle the horizontal branch of the elbow, whereby said bell is held in a fixed position against horizontal play, and a spider carried by the bell and resting on the elbow and having a central aperture loosely fitted over the 2. A lighter of the class described comprising a valve casing having a recess, said casing having a main fiuid passage-way and a fluid by-pass, both opening into said rccess, a torch supply pipe closed throughout its-length and having one end secured in rue said recess and communicating with the main passage-way, a torch head on the free end of sald supply pipe, and a pilot supply tube having its ma or porthm disposed within the supply pipe, one end being'disposed in said recess and connected with the valve casing in communication with said fluid bypass, its other .end being extended through the wall of the supply pipe adj acent itszfree end and disposed externally thereof in juxtaposition to the torch head.
