Description

R. KNIGHT.
TARGET DEVICE.
APPLICATION min JUNE 2B. 1918.
Patented Oct. 8, 1918.
I wuentoz (I "cum 1 Wm we I @agffim UNITED STATES PATENT ,oF IoE.
momma KNIGHT, or Mrnnnnrown, new roan imam nnvrcn.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD KNiGHT, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Middletown, in the county of Orange and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Target De vices, of which the following is a specifica tion, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to holders and particularly to explode a percussion .cap offulminating explosive upon' the striking the bulls-eye of a recording target. I
In the drawings, of my device supported by a sword bayonet.
Fig. 2 is a plan, the bayonet being in section.
Fig. 3 is a central frontto'-rear vertical section.
Fig. 4 is a section on the line 44 of Fig. 2.
In these drawings, 11 represents a miniature target slip having an upper aiming target 12 and a lower recording target 18. This target, is carried in a block of yieldable material 14:, preferably rubber, having target guiding flanges 15, and at 16 a transverse perforation to admit one end of a spring pressed reciprocating pin 17.
The block 1 1 is carried by a sheet metal frame 18-, having block retaining lugs 19, and a suporting stop 20 stamped out of the front portion of the frame 18. The frame 18 is bent at 21 to form a rearwardly extending base 22, from which is out and bent upwardly until vertical, a lug 23 which forms one bearing and serves as a stop for the pin 17. At 24 the frame is also bent upwardly until vertical to form a back 25 for the device.
The pin 17 is held in position by bearings, in the lug 23 and the face of the frame 18, which are horizontally alined with the perforation 16 in the block 14:, and this pin has an enlarged head 26 serving the double purpose of a stop and of affording a striking face. A coiled compression spring 27 bears against the lug 23 and a transverse stop 28 carried by the pin 17.
Attached to the back 25 are downwardly extending resilient strips 29 adapted to en gage a strip of percussion caps 30, of the usual commercial type. To form a support miniature target Specification of Letters Ifatent.
one adapted to' hanging the device indoors,
Figure 1 is a front view theback 25.
In order that the device may be securely supported at any desired elevation, a U- shaped' clamp 32 with terminal enlargements 33, is mounted to slide in two holes in the back 25, its branches being provided with coiled compression springs 84, normally holding the connecting portion of the U against the rear face of the back 25. For a hole 36 in the Patented Oct. 8, 1918. Application filed June 1918. Serial No. 242,389. A I
block 25- is provided as an auxiliary means of attachment to a wall or other support.
In use, with a bayonet blade 35 as a support, Figs. 1 and2show the clamp 32 holding with suflicient friction to overcome motion due to gravity but yielding to upward or downward pressure for adjusting the height, after the point of the bayonet has been forced into the ground until firm.
A rifle equipped with a target practice rod is next brought within striking distance of the target, careful aim taken at the upper target 12, and the trigger released when the sights are alined with the target. If the piece is correctly aimed the practice rod .should strike the center of the target 13,
which in yielding Wlll permit the practice rod to deliver a hammer-like blow to the pin 17. Said pin will in turn strike a percussion cap of the strip 30 against the back 25, causing an explosion which will leave no doubt as to the correctness of aim.
After one cap is exploded, the strip 30 is drawn laterally until an adjacent cap is brought into line with the pin 17 and I prefer to locate the strips 29 so as to bring one cap into line with the pin 17 as one of the following caps comes into contactwith one of the strips 29.
Obviously, various modifications are possible, and I wish to claim the invention without. limitations other than such as appear in allowable claims.
What I claim is 1. The combination with a backing adapted to support a yielding recording miniature target and provided with a perforation in poa yielding face adapted to receive a miniature target :fior recording each impact upon its face, and cap-exploding devices arranged to be operated only by impact at the buIIseye.
3. The combination with a support for a miniature target, adapted to record eah impactof ractice devices upon the target face, of e bulls-eye, and means for iransinittin force of record making impact at the h u eye only to detonating body- 4.
