Description

1963 K. 1.. SAHLSTEN TARGET FOR THROWING GAMES Filed Feb. 4, 1965 ATTORNEW United States Patent 3,405,942 TARGET FOR THROWING GAMES Karl Lennart Sahlsten, Arvika, Sweden (Karlslundsgatan 7, Karlstad, Sweden) Filed Feb. 4, 1965, Ser. No. 430,336 Claims priority, application Sweden, Feb. 12, 1964, 1,688/ 64 4 Claims. (Cl. 273-1024) ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A target for throwing games of the kind wherein throwing bodies are thrown at targets, comprising a body having in its surface a blind hole for holding an explosive marking member projecting upwardly from the top surface and spaced from the bottom of the blind hole which has a stud adapted to penetrate into the explosive marking member to detonate it when the cap marking member is depressed by a throwing body hitting the target.
This invention relates to throwing games and particularly outdoor throwing games.
The invention has for its object to provide a novel target for throwing games which by detonation of an explosive marking member signals a hit by a throwing body at the target. The invention provides a target comprising a body having a top and a bottom side, means on the top side for holding an explosive marking member projecting from the top side and means for detonating the explosive marking member when the marking member is hit by a throwing body.
One embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view illustrating the same;
FIG. 2 is a perspective view, partially in section, of the target;
FIG. 3 is a perspective view, partially in section, of a throwing body.
In FIG. 1 there is shown a rope I or the like forming a triangle defining the outer limit of a target area. A second rope 2 forms a smaller triangle defining the inner limit of the target area. Targets 3, 3' and 3" are placed at and inside the corners of the inner triangle. Throwing bodies are designated 4, 4'.
Each target 3, 3, 3" is constituted by a semi-spherical body or base, preferably of metal, Which at the apex of the top side thereof is provided with a blind hole 5 from the bottom of which a central pointed stud 6 projects upwardly. The blind hole 5 is adapted to snugly receive an explosive marking member 7 and hold it projecting upwardly from the top side of the tar-get body. The explosive marking member 7 is loosely pressed down into the well until it touches the point of the stud 6. The bottom sides of the targets 3, 3', 3" are in the form of depressions 8 surrounded by annular rims to give the targets a firm support on the ground.
The throwing bodies 4, 4' are each constituted by a disclike body, preferably of metal. The throwing bodies or discs have on their opposite sides depressions 9 and 9 respectively to give the explosive marking member 7 an efiicient blow and to quickly come to rest after a throw.
It is intended that the explosive marking member 7, when hit by a throwing disc 4, 4', should be forced down on the pointed stud 6 to be detonated.
The game will now be described. The target area is defined by two equilateral triangles arranged as shown, the point from which the throwing bodies are thrown being at a suitable distance from the triangle. A target is placed at the corners inside the inner triangle. The target area is preferably on a lawn or a sand-field.
When the target area is prepared the targets are loaded with explosive marking member. The explosive marking member are pressed down until they barely touch the pointed stud.
The rules of the game are:
Each player throws three throwing bodies in each of ten rounds. Winner will 'be the player who scores the highest total amount of points in 3 x 10:30 throws.
The amount of points in each throw is:
50 points if the throwing body hits a target and detonates the explosive marking member;
20 points if the throwing body hits a target without detonating the explosive marking member;
10 points if the throwing body comes to rest on or inside the inner triangle limit without hitting a target;
5 points if the throwing body comes to rest between the triangle limits or on the outer triangle limit without hitting a target.
The targets are not reloaded until after completion of the running round.
The invention is not limited to the specific embodiment illustrated and described but is subject to various modifications within the spirit and scope of the invention.
I claim:
1. A target for throwing games of the kind wherein throwing bodies are thrown at targets, comprising a base having a top and a bottom side, means on the top side for holding an explosive marking member projecting from the top side and means for detonating the explosive marking member when the marking member is hit by a throwing body, said base being of sufiicient size and weight and of such configuration to constitute a stable base for said marking member when said target is set upright upon a supporting surface.
2. A target as claimed in claim 1 wherein the target base is provided in the top side thereof with an upwardly open blind hole for holding the explosive marking member, the bottom of the blind hole having an upwardly projecting stud adapted to penetrate into the explosive marking member to detonate it when the marking member is forced downwardly in the blind hole.
3. A target as claimed in claim 1 wherein the top side of the target base is semi-sphen'c and convex, the hold ing means being situated at the apex of the top side.
4. A target as claimed in claim 1 wherein the bottom side of the target base is concave.
