CONTAINER.
Patenten oet. i, raie.
" Appiieatio'n meu July 1o, 19,16. y semina. 108,460.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES T. WILLIAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota,v"ha`.ve invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Containers, of which the following is a spe,(Silicad tion.
My invention relates to advertising containers and has for its object to provide a container or carton having printed thereon or on a face or side thereof certain descriptive matter adapted to advertise the merits and methods of use of the article put up in the container, in combination with a separate member removably attached to the face or faces ofthe container or carton, said separate member including in display type or other distinctive manner the commonly accepted name of the product sold in such carton or container. f It is the purpose of the invention to display said commonly accepted name distinctively and in an easily readable manner upon the face or faces of the package and at the same time make it practicable to use the face of the package for directions, recipes, explanations, etc., the display member being removably attached so as not to interfere with the use of the face of the package for ordinary advertising purposes.
The full objects and advantages of my invention will appear in connection with the detailed description thereof and are particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, illustrating the application of my invention in one form,-
Figure 1 is a face view of a container or carton embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the removable display strip partly removed. Fig. 3 is a section on an enlarged scale taken longitudinally through the side of the carton and the display strip.
In the practice of my invention, a carton or container 10, of pasteboard, wood, metal or any other desirable material, has upon its face, secured by means of printed label or otherwise, advertising matter indicated generally by the numeral 11. This advertising matter may be explanatory or descriptive matter relating to the goods contained in the carton, such as recipes, di-
rections for use and other information which the manufacturer may deslre to 1m- `consumer in respect to the `movably securedrupon the face or faces of thecarton The name of the product does lnot therefore appear conspicuously in connection with such descriptlve matter, and it frequently is desirable to use all of the faces of the carton for such descriptive matter and for the trademark under which the product is sold, in which case the name of the product will not be prominently displayed, although for the purposes of original sale and display on store shelves, it is desirable that the common name of the product should appear prominently on the package.
I accomplish this result and at the same time conserve the full space of the faces of the package for general descriptive matter by applying to the package a strip 12 which may be of the width of the widest face of the package, but preferably is approximately the width of the narrowest face of the package and is applied to the larger faces. The strip 12 is provided with end portions 13, 14 formed on the under surface with an adhesive substance 15, as shown in Fig. 3. The end portions 13 and 14 are of such width that when they are stuck to the face of the package they do not cover the descriptive matter 11 on such face. The strip 12 is everywhere else free from the face of the package and may readily be torn away therefrom to uncover the printed matter underneath. To facilitate ready removal of the strip, the main body or ungummed portion thereof may be connected with the portions 13 and 14 by rows of perforations 16, 17, or other form of weakening the same. When so attached the strip will tear smooth from the gummed portions 13 and 14, leaving said portions, as indicated at the right of Fig. 2, so as not to mar the finish of the face of the strip.
I claim:
1. A container having a relatively large volume of printed or other display matter substantially covering a face thereof in combination with a separate sheet or strip covering the major portion of, and secured to the said face so as to be removable therefrom, said strip comprising gummed end portions permanently attached to the face of the contaminer outside of the seid printed matter, and a cent1-'el-removebleportion connected only to said gulnmed portions and bearing the name or symbol designating the ering the major portion of, and securedto the said face so as to beremoveble therefrom, said strip comprising gummed end portions permanently attached to thef'a'ce of the container outside of seid printed metter, and central removable portion connected to the end i portions by weakened gjoints and held thereby across the face of said printed metter freely removable therefrom, seid central portion having thereon in relatively large: display form the name or symbol of the product Within the container.
In testimony whereof I ailix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
