DEFLECTOR FOR AIR-CURRENTS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented ct. 1, 1918.
Applicatidn led November 5, 1917. Serial No. 200,288.
f placed over the opening so as to'defiect the column of heated air to one side or the other, and also to provide a device of this character which may be' folded so as to occupy slight space, whereby it may be ,stored away when its use is not desired.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown my invention embodied ina type of,v construction which is now most preferred Figure 1 is a face View of the device when in folded position.
Fig. 2 is a section upon the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an end view ofthe device .shown in place over a radiator opening.
Fig. 4 is aside view of the device taken l in section.
My device consists of three principal parts, a central section l, and two side sections, 2, Athe latter being of triangular outline and pivotally connected by one edge respectively with opposite edges of the main- `or central section 1. 'Ihe main or central desired.
In making this of paste board or material of this character, I prefer to provide it wlth i binding strips. The central section 1 1s provided with a binding strip 10 at each of two opposite ends and I have also shown a third binding strip 10 located a short distance from one of the same ends. sides 2 are provided with binding strips 2010- cated alcng the two edges which are not adj a- The two triangular cent to `the central section l. The latter edges of these triangular sides, as well as the sides of section 1, with which they are connected, do not need binding strips as these sides are connected together by a hinge preferably` composed of a strip 21 of cloth or suitable fabric which is glued or otherwise secured `to the two sections. This permits the side sections 2 to fold down upon oneside of the central section 1, as is shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
The central sectionl` is also preferably provided with a central reinforcing bar 11. This reinforcing bar, as well as the binding strips '20 of the side seotionsnaypreferably be made of'wood. A brace 4, by which the side sections may be held in open position,
is provided, this being preferably inthe form of'a wire bent in the general form of a flat V. The apex of this V s'pivotally-fm mounted beneath a clip 40 which is secured to the reinforcing bar 11.` yThe outer ends of the brace are bent upon ends 41'which are 'adapted to be slipped beneathl and be se cured'by clips 42 4which consist of a thin metal strip secured byvone end and having the other end slightly raised lso that the end 41 of the brace rod may slide under and'be securely held by the spring action of thev clip 42.
To secure the sides in folded position I pivotally'mount an L-shaped bar or bolt 5 upon the reinforcing strip 11 at such point that it is close in the apex ofthe angle formed between the two edges of the side sections 2, when the latter are folded down, as is clearly shown in Fig. 1. This being mounted to turn, it may be turned into such position as to overlap `one of these sides and 'thus hold both sides down, or be turned into such position that it will permit raising of the sides.
Thel device is shown'in open position in Figs. 3 and 4, in both cases being shown over a register 6. The triangular side sections 2 are preferably made with the two right angled sides of unequal length. `Theproportions of these sides may be made anything desired. The device may thus be set so as to deflect the rising currentV of hot air squarely to one side or slightly to one side, as may be desired. For convenience in handling the device, especially when it is in open position, I provide a handle 7 which is secured to the reinforcing strip.
This device is very light in weight, may be folded into small space when not desired and ico is readily opened out and held in open position when its use is desired. It is also cheap to-inannfacture and the construction is such that it would last a long time if given any kind of reasonable treatment.
What I claim as my invention is:
l. A defieetor for hot air registers comprising two triangular sides and athird side hingedly connected by opposite sides With an edge of each of the triangular sides and brace members hinged upon the connecting side and having disengageable connection With the triangular sides.
2. A deilector for hot air registers having three sides hingedly joined to outline a Wedge shaped body, a flat V-shaped brace rod pivoted at the apex of the V to the central of 'said sides and means for engaging the ends ofsaid brace with the other sides to hold the sides open.
3. A deliector for hot air registers comprising a four sided plate-like member and two trlangular side members each hinged by one edge respectivelv to opposite edges of the first member, the central member having a reinforcing bar extending centrally thereof inlike direction with its hinged edges7 a V- shaped brace rod hinged at the apex of the V to said reinforcing bar and means for cn gaging its ends with the side plates to hold them open.
4. A deector for hot air registers having a central plate provided With a reinforcing bar v extending along its central line, two triangular plates hinged by an edge With respectively opposite ones of the edges of the central plate which are at the sides of the reinforcing bar, and adapted to fold down and overlap their corners, and a catch mounted upon the reinforcing bar'and adapted to engage the said sides to hold them folded, and means for supporting said sides from the central plate to hold them in opened position.Y
Signed at Seattle, Washington7 this 30th day of October 1917.
