I IMPROVEMENT m BUNGS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 128,014, dated June 18, 1.872.

Specification describing a new and useful Improvement in Barrel-Brings, invented by THOMAS BURKE, of the city, county, and State of New York.

'This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in the bungs of barrels, hogsheads, and all similar vessels; and consists in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described.

In the accompanyingdrawing, Figure l is a top view, with a portion broken away to show the groove of the fastening-bar. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section of Fig. 1 taken on the line 00 w.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

A represents a tubular shell, which is screwed into the barrel or vessel, where it may be secured by wood-screws through the flange B, as represented. B represents the barrel. This shell is to be fastened into the barrel water-tight, and may be packed with canvas or elastic packing (l, as seen in the drawing. Projecting inward from the bottom of the shell is the valve-seat D, and near the top are two inclined grooves, E E, placed opposite each other, and running from the openin g F F downward a little less than half way round the inside of the shell. Gr is the valve or stopper, which is dropped into the shell and rests upon the valve-seat D. The valve G is composed of either-part metal and part cork, wood, or other packing, or altogether of wood and with or without'packing. In this example of my invention, H is metal and I is cork. The valve is made tight and pressed down upon the seat D by the bar J, which spans the shell and enters the grooves E E, as represented in Fig. 1. This bar is confined to the valve by the central pin or lug K, and turns thereon. It enters the grooves E E through the opening F F, and when turned the inclined grooves carry it downward, which tightens the valve. This bar J may be cast or fixed rigidly to the valve or projecting lips, or lugsmay be cast on the valve which will enter the grooves.

I do not confine myself to the precise form of the parts described, as variations may be made without departing from my invention.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A bung consisting of the tube A, flanged at B, slotted at F F, oppositely grooved at O E, and having the valve-seat D, the valve G, formed of metal H and cork I, and the bar J, all relatively constructed and arranged as and for the purpose set forth.
