SMOKING-PIPE.
Specification of Letters Patent. i
"Application filed J u1y'18, 1917. SrialNo. 181,301.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, J AMES ALBERT InvINe, a citizen of the United States, and a reeldent of the city-of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Smoking-Pipe, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention has for its object to provide a breech loading smokingpipe having a body either horizontal or upright with an opening extending from the breech through the bowl to the draft passage. A plug is employed for closing the breech, the said plug being longitudinal for the horizontal body, andin angular form for the upright body, and beingmounted on thestem, the longitudinal and vertical openings in the stem extending through the plug into the breech and being normally covered within the breech by a disk movably mounted on the end of the plug, said disk being attached forthe purpose of preventing particles of tobacco from being drawn into and clogging the vertical and longitudinal openings inthe plug and stem and also for the purpose of directing the draft to the lower part or bottom of the horizontal bowl to insure the consumption of the entirecharge of tobacco, communication between the bowl of the pipe and the vertical and longitudinal openings in the plug and stem being afforded around the lower part of the disk in the horizontal body and around the sides of the disk in the upright body through cut-away slots in the end of the plug radially to said vertical or longitudinal openings.
Additional objects of the invention will appear in the following specification in which the preferred form of the invention is disclosed.
In the drawings similar reference characters denote similar parts in all the views, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation showing one form of my pipe, parts being illustrated in section to show the construction;
Fig. 2 is an end view of the plug on the pipe stem;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a portion of the pipe stem and the plug with the disk moved on its pivot to uncover the face of the plug;
Fig. 4 is a side elevation showing a modified form of the invention, parts being illustrated in section to show the construction; Fig. 5 is a fragmentary view illustrating the plug used in the construction illustrated in Fig. 4:, with the disk moved to uncover the opening in the plug; and
Fig. 6 is a sectional view illustrating another modified form of the invention.
By referring to the drawings it will be seen that the pipe has a body 10 with an opening 11 extending from its draft passage 12 to its breech 13, at which the pipe is loaded: In connection with this body, a stem 14 is provided having a plug 15, there being a longitudinal opening 16 in the pipe stem 14 which extends through the said plug. Pivoted eccentrically to the plug 15 there is a disk 17 which when in normal position covers the longitudinal opening at the face of the plug 15. Communication is afforded from the bowl of the pipe be tween its breech 13 and its draft passage 12, and the longitudinal opening 16 in the pipe stem 14, through a cutaway portion 18 at the face of the plug 15, which forms a radial passage. 1 i
It will be understood that when using the pipe it may be filled at its breech 13, and with. the disk 17 disposed in the 'position illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings the plug may be introduced in the breech 13 of the pipe body to push the tobacco forwardly. When the pipe is smoked, the smoke may be drawn around the disk 17 and through the passage 18 to the longitudinal opening 16. The disk 17 prevents the tobacco from entering the longitudinal passage 16, and it also directs the draft to the lower portion of the bowl of the'horizontal pipe. When it is desired to clean the longitudinal passage 16 in the pipe, the plug 15 is removed from the breech 13 of the body 10, when the disk 17 is moved to the position indicated in Fig. 3 of the drawings, when a pipe cleaner may be readily introduced in the longitudinal opening.
In the modified form of the invention illustrated in Fig. 4 of the drawings, the plug 15 is disposed vertically, so that it may be introduced into the breech 13 of the pipe body 10 the breech 13 being disposed at the bottom of the said .pipe body. In Figs. 4 and 5 of the drawings two projec tions 19 are shown on the face 20 of the plug 15 A disk 17 is pivoted to one of the projections 19 and is adapted to seat on the other projection 19 when the disk is in position for the introduction of the plug in the breech of the pipe.
In the modified form of the invention illustrated in Fig. 6 of the drawings, the breech 13 is disposed at the bottom of the body 10", and the draft. opening 12 is disposed laterally, it being possible to rotate the body 1O on the plug 15" of the pipe stem with reference to the direction of the wind. In other respects the modified forms of the invention illustrated in Figs. 4:, 5 and 6 correspond with the form of the invention illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
In the forms of the invention shown in Figs. 4, 5 and 6 the opening 16 in the pipe stem is angular.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A pipe having a body with a draft passage and an openingextending from the breech of the body through the bowl to the draft passage, a stem having a longitudinal opening with a plug through which the longitudinal opening extends, for closing the breech of the pipe, and a disk movably mounted on the face of the plug and spaced from a portion of the said face, for the purpose specified.
2. A pipe having a body with a draft passage and an opening extending from the breech of the pipe through the bowl to the draft passage, a stem having a longitudinal opening with a plug for closing the breech of the pipe, and a disk disposed at the face of the plug and pivoted eccentrically to the plug, the disk being spaced from a portion Copies of this patent may be obtained for of the face of the plug, for the purpose specified.
3. A pipe having a body with a draft passage and an opening extending from the breech of the pipe through the bowl in one direction to the draft passage, a stem having a longitudinal opening with a plug through which the longitudinal opening extends, the plug being normally disposed in the breech of the pipe for closing the latter and having in its face a passage extending in the other direction from the longitudinal opening to its periphery, and a disk mounted against the face of the plug spaced from the second mentioned passage and closing communication from the body of the pipe to the plug at all other points.
1. A pipe having a body with a draft passage and an opening extending from the breech of the pipe through the bowl to the draft passage, a stem having a longitudinal opening with a plug through which the longitudinal opening extends, the plug being normally disposed in thebreech of the pipe for closing the latter and having in its face a radial passage, and a disk pivoted eccentrically to the face of the plug.
5. A pipe having a bodywith a draft passage and an opening extending from its breech at its bottom to the draftpass-age at its side, a. stem having a longitudinal opening with a plug disposed at an angle to the body of the stem and through which the opening in the stem extends, the plug normally closing the pipe breech, the body of the pipe being rotatable on the plug, and a disk movably mounted at the face of the plug and spaced from a portion of the said face, for the purposespecified.
