To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ARTH R W. CASH, a resident of Decatur, county of Macon, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Implements or Devices for Killing or Disabling Insects, Flies, or the like, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in implements or devices for killing or disabling insects or the like, by striking, and the principal object of this invention is the provision of such a device which is simple in construction, attractive in appearance and capable of withstanding extended use.

Another object of my invention is the provision of such a device, the body portion of which is constructed so as to have maximum flexibility, and in which the handle is securely connected to the body portion so as to strengthen the same and reduce the possibility of breaking the device at this point.

To the accomplishment of the foregoing and such other objects as may hereinafter appear, my invention consists in the combination, construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and then sought to be defined in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, and which shows merely for the purpose of illustrative disclosure, a preferred embodiment of my invention, it being understood that various changes may be made in practice within the scope of the claims without digressing from my inventive idea.

Referring now to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the body portion of the device and the numeral 2, the handle. The body portion of the device is preferably com posed of a woven wire fabric or flexible netting, having its side and top edges provided with the binding 3 of suitable material, such as felt or the like. This increases the attractive appearance of the device and also prevents damage or injury to the surfaces against which the device strikes. The lower corner portions of the body, which is preferably of general rectangular shape, are folded along lines 4: converging to a point, and slightly overlapping as at 5, the bound edge portion 6 extending at a slight angle to the horizontal and forming oblique reinforcements or braces.

The handle is preferably of wire construction, having the loop 7 and twisted grasping portion 8, which extends up to the lower end of the body portion as at 9. The two free ends 10 of the wire slightly diverge as shown, and have the laterally extending portions 11 passing through the openings or mesh of the netting. These free ends are then turned back as at 12 to pass through openings 13 in the upper end of the stay plate 14:. This stay plate is of general rectangular shape, and has its lower corner portions 15 folded over the rear side of the device so as to embrace and clamp the end portions 10 of the handle, as clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing. By having the handle and body connected at the lower end of the body, and by having the connection afi'orded by the free ends of the handle member passing through the body of the killer into the openings in the stay plate, and clamping against the obliquely extending bound edges 6 of the body, a secure attachment is provided. Not only this, but the extended and diverging end portions of the handle member provide a very efiicient brace for the lower portion of the body, and thereby rendering the effective part of the body more flexible and eflicient in operation.

A device constructed according to this disclosure, is simple, attractive in appearance, strong in construction, and has maximum durability.

What I claim is 1. A device of the character described, including in combination, a body portion and a handle member, said body portion being composed of flexible netting, said handle member having its end portions free, and extending along the lower portion of the body of the device with the free ends passing through an intermediate part of the body, a stay plate 011 one side of the body portion having apertures near its upper edge the free ends of said handle portions being bent back to enter said apertures in said stay plate having its lower corners folded upon each other to clamp the free portions of the handle to the lower part of the body of the device.

A device of the character described, including in combination, a body portion composed of flexible netting, of substantially rectangular shape, and having its lower corner portions folded along the line converging to a point, and slightly over each other, a handle member having free end portions adapted to extend from the lower extremity of said body portion over the folded part thereof, with the free ends passing through the body and turned down upon themselves, a stay plate on the other side of said body having apertures to receive the turned down free ends of the handle and having portions folded over the lower extremity of the body and the free end portions of the handle so as to clamp the parts together.

3; A device of the character described, including in combination, a body portion and a handle member, said body portion being composed of flexible netting of substantially rectangular shape and having its lower corner portions folded along linQs converging to a point and slightly overlapping each other, said handlemember having a pair of free end portions extending from the lower point of the body to the upper edge of the folded portions, the free ends passing through the body and being turned down upon themselves, a stay plate on the other side of said body extending from the lower point thereof to near the upper edge of the folded portions and having apertures near the top thereof, the down turned free ends of the handle member being positioned in said apertures, said stay plate having its lower corners folded over the other side of the body and the end portions of the handle so as to clamp the free end portions of the handle to the body adjacent the lower extremity thereof.
