INSECT-SWATTER.

To all whom it may concern.

Be it known that I, ALLEN SMITH, J12, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Diego, in the county of San Diego and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Insect- Swatters, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an insect swatter and the objects of my invention are: first, to provide an elastic device for killing flies, mosquitos and the like; second, to prov de a device of this class which will provide amusement and pastime as well as an effective insect killer; third, to provide a device of this class by the use of which insects on ceilings or other places where it is diflicult to reach in other ways may be effectively killed and fourth, to provide a device of this class which is very simple and economical of construction, durable, easy to operate, effective, and which will not readily deteriorate or get out of order.

With these and other objects in view as will appear herinafter, my invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts and portions as will be hereinafter described in detail and particularly set forth in the appended claims, reference belng had to the accompanying drawings and to the characters of reference thereon which form a part of this application, in which:

Figure is a plan view of my insect swatter assembled ready for use in the preferred form; Fig. 2 is an edge view thereof; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the same in position ready for use; Fig. 4 is a fragmentary side elevational view of the handle and elastic connection in a slightly modified form to that of Figs. 1, 2 and 3 and Fig. 5 is a similar view at a right angle thereto.

Similar characters of reference refer to similar parts and portions throughout the several views of the drawings.

The handle member 1, elastic member 2, reinforcing fabric 3, reinforcing fabric 4, link 5, roller 6, clip 7 and swatting memher 8 constitute the principal parts and portions of my insect swatter.

In the preferred form of construction the handle member 1 consists of a flat metallic member folded intermediate its ends in curved form as shown best in Fig. 2 of the drawings and the ends are corrugated at 1 with conforming corrugations and Specification of Letters Patent.

provided with a hole for a screw 1 for securely clamping the end of the elastic member 2 between said members. It is preferred to provide the end of said elastic member with a hole through which the screw 1 extends. This member 2 is provided with a reinforcing member 3, preferably fabric, to prevent wear and breakage of the member 2 where it is subjected to wear against the member 1. It will be noted that the extended ends of the member 1 are turned at 1 providing a rounding surface for the engagement of the elastic member 2 and reinforcing member 3. This elastic member 2 is of suitable length and its other end is provided with a loop by folding its end back against itself and mounted in this loop is a reinforcement 4; which is preferably fabric. Mounted inside of this fabric is a link member 5 which is preferably a metallic link member provided composed of leather on similar material.

and the outer end is cut into a plurality of strips forming lashes for swatting the insects.

The operation of the device is as follows: The handle member 1 isheld in the one hand, the swatting member 8 in the other hand, the elastic member 2 stretched, aim taken' and the swatting member released.

In the modified form of construction shown in Figs. 4 and 5 the handle member is an ordinary handle shaped member 9 provided with a bifurcated clip member 10 in which is mounted a link 11 and the end of the elastic member 2 is folded back against itself with a reinforcement between the folded portions and the link is provided with a rubber roller 11 similar to the connection to the swatter in the preferred form.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

1. An insect swatter, including a single non-branch handle member, a single longitudinally extendible elastic strip connected to the one end of said handle member adapted to be turned to a position normally longitudinally extendible elastic strip and 7 a relatively broad sWatter member pivot ally connected to one end thereof provided 10 with a plurality of lashes on its free side.
