ARTHUR W. CASH, OF DECATUR, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO UNITED STATES WIRE lVIAT COMPANY, OF DECATUR, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
rMrLEMENT on DEVICE EOE KILLING oa DISABLI'NG rNsEC'rs7 rLIEs, oa THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June *7, 1921.
Application filed December 3, 1917.V Serial No. 205,086.
1o all 'whom t may cof/cern Be it known that I, ARTHUR IV. CASH, a citizenofl the United States, a resident of Decatur', in the county of Macon and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Implements or Devices for Killing or Disabling Insects, Flies, or the like, of which the following is a specification.
|This invention relates to improvements in implements or devices for killing or disabling insects or the like, by striking, and the principal object of this invention is the provision of such a device which is simple in construction, attractive in appearance and capable of withstanding extended use.
Another object of this invention is the provision of such a device, the body portion of which is constructed so as to have maximum iiexibility and strength, and in which the handle securely connected to the body portion so as to strengthen the same and-to reduce the possibility of breakage or separation between the handle and the body portion of the device.
Further objects include the provision of such a device which is simple in construction and cheaply manufactured, and which will give extended use and service.
`To the accomplishment of the foregoing and such other objects as may hereinafter appear, my invention consists in the'combination, construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and then sought to be defined in the appended claims, refer* ence being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part hereof, which shows merely for the purpose of illustrative disclosure, a preferred embodiment of my invention', it being understood that various changes may be made in practice within the scope of the claims without digressing from my inventive idea.
In the drawings,
Figure 1 represents an elevational view of one side of one form of device constructed according to this invention;
Fig. 2 is a similar view of a slightly different form of deviceA constructed to embody this invention; y
Fig. 3 is a detail view showing the manner of securing the handle to the body of the device, taken on the other `side of the body of the device shown in Fig. 1, and
Fig. t is an enlarged detail sectional View through the edge binding and the 4additional binding and strengthening strip.
YReferring now to the drawing, and first to Figs. 1, 3 and 4, the numeral 1 designates the body portion of the device. This is preferably composed of a woven wire fabric or flexible netting, rectangular in shape and having its side and top edges provided with a` binding 2 of suitable material, such as felt or the like, for the purpose of increasing the attractiveness of the device and preventing damage or injury to the surfaces against which the device is struck.`
The body portion may be provided with the medial reinforcements 3, if desired. The lower corner portions of the body of the device are folded along lines 4 converging to a point, ,as shown, and slightly overlapping so as to provide a portion of threeply thickness. It is to be noted that the bound edge portionsI 5 converge toward each other and intersect, forming oblique reinforcements or braces.
The handle 6 is of a single piece of wire looped as at 7 to provide the grasping portion twisted as at 8 and having the straight portion 9 extending to the twisted part 10, which extends to the point at the lower end of the body.. The free end portions 11 of the wire are extended obliquely along the line 4 on which the lower' corner portions of the bodyA are folded and within this folded part to a point near the edge of the body, at which point 12 these free end portions are bent so as to extend substantially parallel to the bound edges. These. free ends terminate near the middle of the body and affordstrong braces and reinforcements for the body along the lines 4l on which the lower corner portions are folded and along the lines 5 of the bound edges'of the folded portions.
In order to hold the parts securely together, and to retain and hold the folded portions of the body closely thereto, I use the plurality of rivets or staples 13 which are inserted through the binding adjacent the bend in the same, and which are also inserted through the binding adjacent the intersection of the folded portions thereof. These last mentioned rivets or staples are also positioned adjacent and close to the ends of the wire memberforming the handle, and therefore, not only hold the folded portions of the body closely to the body,
but also coperate to hold the free end portions securely in place within the folded portions of the body.
As an additional-securing means, I stitch the bound edges of the folded portions through the body and also provide on the other side, the additional strip of binding 14 as shown in Figs. 3 and 4L which prevents the stitching from being torn or ripped out in the use of the device. The twisted portions of the handle are for the purpose of giving it stiffness and rigidity, while the straight portions give the handle a slight resiliency so that it may act quickly and elliciently.
A slightly different form of my invention is shown in Fig. 2, wherein the body member 15 is substantially the same form as shown in Fig. 1, but does not have bound edges or the medial reinforcements. Instead, the side edge portions are folded over uponthemselves a plurality of times as at 16, and thereby provide the side reinforcements. Due to the fact that the lower corner portions of the body are folded, these folded side edge portions extend obli uely across the lower portion of the body o the device and intersect each other, forming oblique reinforcements or braces 17. handle is of the same construction, the only difference being in the length. Y The handle shown in Fig. 2 is of standard length, while that shown in Fig. 1 is extra long so as to enable the user to reach a greater distance.
In the construction shown in Fig. 2, the plurality of the rivets or clamps 18 are utilized, extending through the folded portions of the netting and arranged substantially as arranged in the construction shown in Fig. 1, so that they operate not only to hold the folded portions of the body down against the body, but also hold the handle tightly and securely within the body.
That I claim is:
1. A device ofthe character described, including in combination a body portion, and a handle, said body portion being composed of liexible netting of substantially rectangular shape, having its side and top edges bound with a soft, flexible material and having its lower corner portions folded along lines converging to a point and slightly overlapping, said handle member being in Ther the form of a lopped wire to provide the gripping portion and having its end portions free and positioned between the body portion and the folded corner portions, the end portions of the handle extending along lines on which the lower corner portions are folded and then bent and extended to substz'rntialiy the intermediate part of the body portion, and securing means for connecting the upper edges of the folded corner portions to the body portion so as to hold'these edges against the body portion and to hold thev free end portions ofthe handle inem ber therein, said securing means passing through the binding and the body portion and a strip of flexible material positioned on the side of the body opposite the binding in which the ends of the securing means are clenched.
2. A device of the character described, including in combination,l a body portion and a handle, said body portion being composed of flexible netting of substantially Vrectangular siape, having its side and top edges bound with a soft, liexible material and having its lower corner portions folded along lines converging to `a point and slightly overlapping, said handle member being in the form of a looped wire to provide the gripping' portion and having its end portions free and positioned between the body portion and the folded corner portions, the cnd portions of the handle extending along lines on which the lower corner portions are folded and then bent and extended to sub stantially the intermediate part of the Vbody poi-tiem and securing means for connecting the upper edges of the folded corner portions to the body portion so as to hold these edges against the body portion and to hold the it'rceend portions-of the handle member therein, said securing means passing through the binding and the body portion and a strip of flexible material positioned on the side of the body opposite the binding in which theends of the securing means are clenched, said'binding and additional strip being also connected by stitching through the meshes of the body portion. Y
In witness whereof,I have hereunto affixed my hand this 27th yday of November, 1917.
ARTHUR W, CASH.
