Be it known that I, CARL VENDER, a citizen of Switzerland,`residing at `Holter,"in the county of Lewis and Clark and State of Montana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Torpedo-Guards, of which the following is a specication.
This invention relates toltorpedo guards and the object is to provide a series of guard units which shall in a measure constitute an armor plating of special character adapted for the deiiection of a torpedo from the sides of a vessel or for the explosion of said torpedo under impact with the plates constituting the protecting device.
A further object is to provide a series of pivotally or hingedly mounted plates which shall be carried by vertically disposed shafts at the sides of a vessel and which shall be adapted for movement about said shafts as an axis, in order to ,reduce the resistance when the course of the vessel is changed from port to starboard.
A still further object is to provide a series of guard units each carrying a vertically disposed shaft and a swinging guard member, with means for changing theelevation of the outer portions of the guard "u'iits and therefore of the plates, in order to raise the guards from operative to inoperative position.

The vertical shafts carrying the guard plates are designated 10, these shafts being mounted within blocks 12, which are in turn carried by the outer ends of arms 111 designed to project outwardly from the sides of the vessel and to be maintained in a substantially horizontal position when the guard is in operative position. Bars 14 are pivotally mounted in brackets 15 secured to the sides of the vessel in order to permit the raising of the guard members by means 'of `any suitable apparatus. In the drawings I ally connected at 21 with brackets 22 also secured to the sides of the vessel.
The guard members proper each comprise plates 25 which may be termed armor plates, although it is of course understood that they `are not sufficiently heavy in construction to add unnecessary Weight to the series of guards mounted as herein described. Carried upon shafts 10 are tubular members 26 having outwardly extending flanges 27 spaced apart and inwardly turned as indicated at 28 for the purpose of providing engaging devices or jaws by means of which the plates may be mounted and secured. The edge portions of the tubular member may be secured by rivets in any suitable manner. Each guard member or plate 25 is provided with a transversely extending plate or strip 30 at one end thereof rigidly secured to the plate, by means of rivets or the like and designed to engage the flanged portions 27 above referred to. This construction permits the easy and prompt renewal of the plates or the individual plate members when damaged from any cause.
What is claimed is:
