a citizen of Buseiyresiding at Chicag the county of Cook and State of Ilhnoli,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ship-Protectors, of which the following is a specification.
The primary object of the invention 15 the provision of a resilient means carried by the hull of a vessel for warding off and rendering inefl'ectual any missiles approaching the vessel at a point adjacent the water line, the arrangement being such as to offer only slight resistance to the travel of the vessel through the water.
A further object of the device is the provision of a bufier means carried at the opposite sides of a ships hull for cushioning and absorbing the shocks of oncoming missiles.

Referring more in detail to the drawing, my device broadly consists of a plurality of resilient armor plates 10 adapted to be attached to the opposite sides of a hull such as 11 of aship 12, the latter having a deck 13 arranged with a cabin 14, funnels 15, and wireless apparatus 16, the usual rudder 17 alrlid propeller 18 being arranged for the s 1p.
Outwardly projecting brackets 19 are carried by the hull 11 having arallel supporting arms 20 arranged with ongitudinal slots 21 closed at the outer free ends of the said arms. The plates 10 are substantially rectangular in form and arcuate in longitud nal section, the same being formed of resilient :material as I thin sheet I metal. and
being hollow with a receiving chamber 22 within each plate 10. Y I
i A' filling is arranged within the chamber 22 consisting of feathers or sponges 23 and resilient material such as rubber 24, the latter being arranged adjacent the outer face of the plate. A pintle 25 is adapted for hinging together the adjacent lates 10 and extends through the slots 21 o the arms 20 with the headed ends 26 of the pintle positioned outwardly of the adjacent arm. It will be understood that the plates 10 are not only connected together by means of the bolts 25, but the lates are also horizontally shiftably mounted upon the arms 21 carried by the hull 11, the inward movement of the plates 10 toward the hull being limited by the inner ends 27 of the slots 21 being contacted by the pintles 25.
A plurality of springs 28 are tensioned! will hit the outer face of the plates 10 adj acent the rubber layer 24 which will cushion the blow, the shock being further absorbed by the layer of feathers 23. The force of the blow upon the plates 10 will be also exerted upon the springs 28 and the plates 10 will be forced inwardly toward the hull by the force of the missiles but by reason of the several cushioning elements provided by the device, the missile will be gently stopped and prevented from striking the hull 11. The plates 10 will offer very little resistance to movement of the ship 12 through the water and the plates will also serve as a buffer when approaching a dock or another ship. The plates 10 are preferably extended to entirely surround the hull 11 being connected together at the stern 31 and bow 32.
