- This invention relates to improvements in r .blast and similar furnaces, and has particuthe construction of water jackets for cupola,
-lar relation to improvements in stay-bolts for such water jackets.
An object of the invention is to provide a water jacket. for cupola, blast and'similar furnaces, whichis simple and durable in construction and efiicient in operation. One
of the more specific objects is to provide a simple and .efiicient stay-bolt for water jackets. A further specific object is to provide means for effectively cooling the. inside or fire sheet of a water jacket at the portions thereof to which the stay-bolts are attached. 5
It has heretofore been proposed in the construction of water jackets, to providea stay-bolt having one end welded directly to the inside or fire sheetand having its opposite end passed through .an opening in the stay-bolt CllSClOSGd in Fig.1 showing a fragoutside sheet and riveted orotherwise detachably secured'to the outside sheet. It has also been proposed to provide a con- I struction in which the stay-bolt is permaf'nently secured by :welding its ends to both the inside and outside sheets. Another proposed construction of the prior art is to V provide alined openings in the. two sheets,
4 and to pass the stay-bolt through theseopen- V s ings, riveting or otherwise securing the outer end of the stay-bolt to the outside 7 sheet andwelding the inner end thereof to j the inside sheet, the opening in the inside sheet adjacent the welded end of the bolt being subsequently closed by means of, a welded plug.
- In order to avold perforating or otherwise weakening the fire sheet at'the points of at-- tachment of the stay-bolt thereto, and also in order to. permit; ready attachment and -re-- moval of the bolt, it has been proposed to weld or otherwise firmly secure a boss to the fire sheet and to detachably secure the staybolt to the boss, the opposite end of the bolt being fastened to the outside sheet by any suitable means. This construction has the WATER-JACKET.

The insideor'fire sheet 1 is usually constructed of somewhat heavier ma tei'ial than that used for the outside sheet 2. In orderto prevent collapse; of the inside i and outside sheets of the jacket, it is desirable to tie the two sheets 1, 2, firmly to each other at various portions of the jacket. For
this purpose stay-bolts are ordinarily em ployed, these stay-bolts being distributed at various points throughout the jacket. 3
7 Referring specifically to Figs. 1 and 2, the inside or fire sheet 1 has a projecting element or boss 6 secured thereto preferably by welding. The boss'6 is provided with a through passage 13 adjacent the fire sheet 1, this passage communicating at its ends with the interior of the jacket. The boss 6 is also 'providedwit'h "a threaded socket 6X- tending transversely of the through passage 13. A stay bolt 3 having a threaded end 12 of reduced diameter, is secured to the boss 6 by insertion of the threadedend 12 into the socket of the boss 6. The outerend ofthe staybolt 3 passes through an opening in theoutside sheet 2, and is also screw threaded and of reduced diameter; A nut 11 which engages the threadedouterend of the bolt 3 clamps the outside sheet 2 firmly between the shoulder formed on the stay-bolt 3 by the reduction in diameter of the end thereof, and a pair of washers 9, 10. The washer 9 ispreferably formed of asbestos, while the washer 10 is formed ofordinary material. lvith this constructionof stay-bolt 3-it will be noted that the'sheets 1,2,are effectively prevented from spreading by the screw thread engagement of the ends of the bolt 3 with the'boss6 and nut 11, respectively, and from approachhig each other by theshoulders formedbythe 'red'uct-ion in' the diametersof the ends of the bolt.
Referring-specifically to Figs. 3' and 4,
the inside or fire sheet 1 has a projecting opening in theoutside sheet 2- and is pro-v vided with screw threads. A bushing or sleeve 5 surrounds the portion of the staybolt 4 intermediate; the boss 7 andoutside v sheet'2, the ends of this sleeve abutting the adjacent elements. A nut 11 engages the threaded end of the stay-bolt 4t and clamps the bushing 5between the boss 7 and outside sheet 2, this nut also clamping the outside sheet 2 between the sleeve 5 and a pair of'washe'rs 9, 10. The washer 9 is preferably formed of asbestos, while the washer 10 is formed of ordinary material. WVith this construction of stay-bolt 4 it will be noted that Lars-3,696
the sheets 1, 2, are effectively prevented from spreading by the engagement of the headed end 8 with'the inner'surfa'ce ofthe' boss 7 and the engagement 'ofthenut 11' with the threaded outer end of the bolt. Inward collapse of the sheets 1, 2, is prevented by the sleeve 5.
It will be noted that in each ofthe constructions of stay-bolt disclosed, the bolt may be readily applied without perforating or otherwise weakening the fire sheet 1 adjacent the bolt, thereby eliminating leaks at the point of attachment of the bolt'to this sheet. The stay-bolts may also be readily removed from the jacket, thereby permitting ment of the stay-bolts to this sheet are, by
circulation of the fluid'in the acket through these passages automaticallymaintained sufficiently cool to prevent burning of the sheet at these portions.
It should be understood that it is not de sired to be limited to the-exact details-of construction shown-and described, for obvious modifications within the scope of the appended claims will occurto a person skilled in the art.
It is claimed and desired'to secure by Let- A ters Patent,'
1. In combination, 1 a fire sheet, an outsidesheet, an element secured to one of said sheets atan imperforate portion'-thereof,
said element having a passage therethrough adjacent said sheet, a stay-bolt secured to said element, and means for securing said stay-bolt tothe other of said sheets.-
2. Incombination, afire sheet, an outside sheet, an element 'securedto said firesheet at an imperforate portion thereof, said element having a passage therethrough adjacent said sheet, a stay-bolt secured tosaid element, and means for securing saidstaybolt to said outside sheet.
.3. In combination, a fire sheet, anoutside sheet, an element secured to saidfire sheet at a portion of saidsheet wh-i'ch'is imperforate and of uniform thickness, said elementhaving a passage therethrough adjacent said sheet, a stay-bolt secured to said element, and means for securing said stay-bolt. to" said outside sheet.
