PATENT OFFICE.
VITTORIO ANDRIOLI, OF SGHENECTADY, NEW YORK.
STAY ROD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 11, 1922.
Application filed October 19, 1920. Serial No. 418,035.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VIrToRro ANDRroLr, a subject of the King" of Italy, residingat Schenectady, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sta-y Rods; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to'make and use the same.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in intermovable stay rods or bolts.
The purpose of the present invention is the provision ofa stay rod or bolt by means of which two sides of any receptacle such as for instance the fire box of a locomotive boiler and its outer sheeting may be held together, and in which provision is made whereby under the expansion or contraction of the materials joined together, the said rods or staybolts will hold the two sides of the receptacle in proper position.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a rodor stay bolt so constructed that one end thereofwill be'permitted' of the necessary movement when the materials which the said rods or bolts connect either expand or contract due to variou changes of temperature. I
Another object of the invention is the pro-.
1 which the said rod connects.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a stay rod or bolt which will be comparatively simple and incxpensive to manufacture, reliable and efficient in use, and readily operated.
With the above and other objects in view, the present invention resides in the novel features of construction, formations, combinations and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of the present application, and in which: I
Figure 1 is a transverse sectional View taken through a portion of a locomotive boiler showing a section applied thereto;
Figure 2 is an enlarged sectional view thereof showing one end of the stay bolt;
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2 showing a modified form of the invention in which a boiler tubular member is used ining by corresponding characters 0 refer ence throughout the-several views and particularly to Figures 1 and 2 thereof, the
numeral 7 designates generally a portion of a locomotive boiler, comprising the fire box 8 and outer sheeting 9 connected by my improved stay bolt or'rod '10. This rod lO is provided with a suitable head 11 which engages an opening formed in the fire box 8, whlle the opposite end thereof extends through an opening 12 formed in the sheet ing9. This opening 12 is slightly larger than the stay'rod or bolt 10 to permit of the slight movement of the latter therein.
A ring 13 is positioned upon the outer.
side of thesheeting 9 and is provided with an opening 14 of the size corresponding to the before mentloned opening 12. The outer,
side of this ring 13 is formed with a spherical recess or seat 15 which is engaged by collar 16 provided with a corresponding spherical shaped inner side 17 adapted to engage the before described seat 15. This collar 16 is slidably mounted upon the said bolt 10 and is clamped in position by the nut 18 which engages the threaded end of the stay rod.
Obviously the heat within the fire box causes the expansion and contraction of the same which moves the bolt 10 from the full to the dotted or from the. dotted to the full lined position shown in Figure 1, which causes the. spherical faces of the ring 13 and collar 16 to slide against each other to permit of this necessary expansion and contraction without displacing any of the several parts.
As shown in Figure 2, the ring, collar, nut or the like may be enclosed by a suitable cap 19 which may be secured to the outer side of the sheeting 9 in any preferred manner.
In Figure 3, a modified form of the invention is employed. In this form the bolt or rod 10 is dispensed with and a boiler tube 20 is used. An additional washer 21 may be placed between the inner side of the ring 13 and adjacent portion of the, boiler 2:2 to
' prevent a normal plan parallel to the plan of the ring upon which the ringrl3 works, while the collar 16 is threaded upon the outer end of the boiler tube 20, as shown at 23. i e
The cap 19 is likewise sealed against leakage by a suitable gasket shown at 2%.
As the function of the parts in the dis closure of Figure 3 is identical to thatshown in Figures 1 and 2, a. further description thereof is not deemed necessary.
In Figure 4 of the drawing, the nut 18 is dispensed with and the collar 13 is held in position by a suitable cutter key or other tensioning device, shown at 25. In this form, the washer 21 may likewise be employed, and in any otherrespects, this disclosure corresponds to that shown in the provided for which will fulfill all of the necessary requirements of such a device, and
it should be understood in this connection,
that various minor changes in the specific details of construction can be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims,
without departing from the spirit or sacri ficing any of the advantages of the inven tion. I 4 Having thus fully described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a device of the character described,
the combination with spaced sections of material, a stay bolt connecting said sections, a loose ring surrounding the stay bolt and engaging one of said sections, and a collar freely mounted upon the stay bolt and engaging the ring for sliding movement thereon.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with spaced sections of material, a stay bolt passing therethrough, a loose ring at one end of the stay bolt, a collar held upon the stay boltand engaging the ring, and the said collar and ring pro- .vided with spherical contacting faces, and
' set forth.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination with av pair of spaced sections of material, a stay bolt passing therethrough, aloose ring surrounding the said bolt and engaging one of the sections of material, said ring having an outer spherical seat, a collar slidable upon the stay bolt and having a spherical surface engaging the spherical seat of the ring, and means carried by the stay bolt for holding the collar inengagement with'the ring. 7
at. In a device such as described, the combination with a pair of spaced sectionsof material, a stay bolt engaging one section and passing through an enlarged opening in the other section, a loose ring surrounding the stay bolt and engaging the section of material having the opening. formed therein,
said ring having an outer spherical seat formed therein, a collar slidable upon the stay bolt and having a spherical surface in engagement with the spherical seat in said ring, and means directly engaged with the collar for retaining the latterin engagement with the ring. 7 a V 5. In a device of the character described, the combination with a pair of spaced sections of material, said sections having aligning openings formed therein, a stay bolt held in the opening inone of said sections and passing through the opening 1n the second sectlon, the opening 1n the second section being larger than the diameter of my hand. 7 V
