WILLIAM nose, or BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
BATH SPRAY OR DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept.'1"7, 1918.
Application filed March 31, 1917. Serial No. 158,903.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM Rosa, citizen of the United States, and resident of the borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, city and State ofNew York, have invented certain new and "useful Improvements in Bath Sprays or' Devices, of which the following is a specification. V
My invention relates to bath-sprays or shower devices for use more particularly in bath tubs.
The objects of my invention, generally stated, are to provide a simple and efiicient device of the character specified which may be manufactured at small cost; which may be readily applied to or detached from a standard bath tub fixture; which may be readily adjusted to and held for use in different positions; which affords a full and effective shower without the liability of dis charging outside or'over the edges of the tubyand which may be used as a container to receive and discharge perfume, liquid soap, &c.
To the above and other ends which will hereinafter appear,'my invention consists of the features of construction, arrangements of parts and combinations of devices set forth in the following specification and particularly pointed out in the appended claims. In the accompanying drawing wherein like reference characters designate corresponding parts in the various views,
Figure l is a detail perspective View of my device shown attached to the faucet of a bath tub and supported in position for use.
Fig. 2 is a detail top plan view of supporting and adjusting means for the spray head. Fig. 3' is a detail side view with parts broken away, of the spray head or nozzle.
Fig. 4: is a rear View of the same. Thebath-spray or device of my invention comprises an outlet head indicated as a whole by the reference numeral 1. This head is preferably elliptical in contouras shown and is formed as a hollow receptacle, access to which may be gained through an opening which ordinarily is closed by a detachable cover or cap 2. In the present instance this cover is in the nature of a screw cap threaded at 3 for'cotiperation with corresponding threads on a nipple whichprojectsifrom the rear side of the head 1. Theopposite broad side of the head is erforated att to provide outlet openings. 7 Vhen the screw cap 2 is removed access is afforded to the inside of the hollow head in order to clean it or remove any obstructions from the outlet openings. It will likewise be understood that the head 1 is in the nature of a container in which perfume, hard or liquid soap, sea salt or any other suitable material may be introduced when the cap is removed. In use, water passing through the head will become mixed with, or take up, such material, conveying it in a fine spray directly to the body of' the user of the device. This isa more economical method of using such materials than to attempt to use the same in the entire contents of the tub.
One end of the head is provided with an inlet tube or nipple '5 by which water is con veyed to the head from a bath tub faucet 6 through a flexible tube 7. One end of the tube fits over the nipple 5 and the other end over the outlet of the faucet 6. A collar, strap or band 8 surrounds that end of the tube 7 which is on the nipple 5. The ends of the strap are bent off from the circular portion thereof to form two parallel arms 9 which are perforated to receive a headed screw 10. The threaded end of the screw receives a thumb nut 11 which acts as a binding screw to draw the ends of the strap together and tighten the loop thereof on the flexible tube and thus securely bind it to the nipple'5. A corresponding collar, strap or band surrounds thatend of the flexible tube which is on the faucet 6 and in a like manner secures the tube to the faucet with the aid of a binding screw. The parts of this sec- 0nd attaching device are designated by the same reference characters as those employed to indicate the corresponding parts of the previously described device,'with the addition thereto of the exponent a. 'A supportbe adjusted around its pivot 10*. The opposite end of the arm 12 is received in a like manner between the arms 9 of the strap 8, the screw 10 constituting a pivot by which thehead may be turned on arm 12. By tightening thethumb nut 11 the head may be held in any position to which it is adjusted around the pivot 10 which connects it to the arm 12. From the foregoing description it will be understood that each of the devices 8 and 8 performs a two-fold function. Thus, the member 8 binds the flexible tube to the faucet and firmly supports the spray device on the faucet, permitting a bodily rotative adjustment around the faucet if desired. The member 8 also provides means for retaining the arm 12 in the position to which it may be adjusted around the Pivot 10 The strap 8 in addition to firmly connecting one end of the flexible tube to the spray head connects the head to the arm 12 and holds the head in the position to which it may be adjusted on the arm 12 around the pivot 10. The strap 8 also enables an adjustment of the spray head to be effected around the axis of the nipple 5 if desired. It will be understood therefore that the construction in effect provides a universal joint by which an adjustment of the head to various positions and to various angles may be eifected. Ordinarily, however, it is sufiicient to provide an adjustment of the head to diflerent elevations and to different angles with reference to the surface of the water in the tub, without turning the head toward the sides of the tub and while it is maintained in the median plane thereof. These adjustments may be readily effected under the con ditions mentioned with my device and in some instances without disturbing the adjustments of the binding screws. These adjustments of the head under the conditions specified are advantageous in that it prevents water from being discharged from the spray head over the sides of the tub. The spray-device of my invention has been devised as a whole with this last mentioned obj ect in view and the construction is such that it is diflicult at any time to discharge water from the spray over the sides of the tub unless it be deliberately set or adjusted with this object in view. 7
By forming the spray head elliptical in cross section, I provide an increased flow from the head without incurring the risk of Water being projected over the sides of the tub, the shorter diameter of the head being presented crosswise of the tub under all ordinary adjustments of the head.
From the foregoing description it will be understood that by my invention 1 have provided a construction all parts of which, except the flexible tube, may be made of sheet metal; that the construction comprises but few parts and-may be manufactured at small cost, and that the device is efficient in use and may be readily applied to Or detached from bath tub fixtures of standard construction.
It will be understood that certain features may be employed without others and that various changes may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
