To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY BEHM, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, and a resident of Elizabeth, county of Union, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Vibrators and Sprays, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved vibrator which is adapted to be operated by a current of fluid, either water, air or the like, which is preferably conducted to the vibrating part of the vibrator by flexihle means, such as a hose, so as to permit the portable use of the vibrator.
The vibrator consists of a holder which has vibrating elements which are adapted to be placed against the body, having, mounted therein, a rotor which is unbalanced so that when it revolves the centrifugal force of the rotor causes a vibration of the holder.
T ie invention further consists in providing such a holder with a rotor and a nozzle for projecting the fluid against the rotor, the nozzle and the rotor being adapted to be placed into and also out of alinement so that the stream of fluid can be used direct without vibration of the holder, but also used so as to allow vibration of the holder when the rotor is in the path of the stream from the nozzle.
The invention comprises further a rotor that is suspended so that it can be moved at will from the path of the stream from the nozzle and held in this latter position until it is desired to again cause the rotation of the rotor. The invention also pro vides a handle which can be attached to the holder in such a manner as to permit the handle to be placed in different positions and held in these different positions.
Another object of the invention is to provide a means for attaching the handle to the holder, said attaching means also acting to clamp the hose to the back of the holder, thus insuring a tight joint and pre venting leaks.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a view showing the holder portion in section with the handle and flexible hose in elevation. Fig. 2 is a section on line 2, 2, in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section through the handle attaching device taken on line 3, 3,

The vibrator comprises a holder 10 of any desired form, the preferred shape being cup-shaped, open at the front and having, at the back, a small, projecting mouth 11 which is provided on its inner end with a nozzle 12, the nozzle being placed inside the holder and projecting a stream of fluid toward the open end of the holder. A flexible hose 13 is usually used with the vibrator and has its end 14 placed around the mouth 11 of the holder. A collar 15 is placed over the end 11 of the hose, the collar having wings 16. Against one of the wings is arranged a plate 17 of a handle 18, the plate and the wings having a bolt or screw 19 passing through them with suitable nuts 20 for fastening them together and drawing the wings toward each other so as to clamp the hose tightly around the mouth 1.1. The plate 17 is adapted to swing on the stud or screw 19 and can be swung to different positions, as desired. To look the handle in certain desired positions, locking means or holding means are devised for securing the handle in place. One form of holding the handle is illustrated in the drawing in Which the plate is provided with a projection 21 which is adapted to rest in recesses 22, the spring of the metal, of which the wings and the plate are composed, allowing for the binding action which is sufficient to hold the handle in the desired position.

The open face of the holder is provided with vibrating elements which can be of any type and which can be secured in any manner. The form shown in Figs. 1 and 2 comprises a ring 23 made of elastic material 0 that it can be bent over the head 24 at the open end of the holder, the ring 23 having posts or'fingers 25, these being usually made of rubber and providing a series of vibrating elements which can be placed against the skin without danger of abrasion. I prefer to fasten the screen 26 against the open face of the holder, this screen being held by the ring 23 or in any other way, the screen acting to transform any stream the rotor 28 is mounted of fluid from the nozzle, that hits the screen, into a spray. It will be understood that any suitable perforated sheet on the open face of the holder, which sheet would act similar to a screen in dividing the stream, can be used. An axle 27 is arranged across the holder and acts to support a rotor 28, the rotor having paddles or wings 29, these paddles being adapted to receive the stream from the nozzle '12, whereby the rotor is rotated.
To magnify or to make more positive the vibrating motion, the rotor is usually unbalanced, that is, one side is heavier than the other, and in the form shown this is accomplished by making the hub 80 eccentric so that when it rotates the centrifugal force causes a swinging or vibration of the rotor sutlicient to make a positive vibrating action of the holder, and particularly of the vibrating elements 25. In the form of device shown in Figs. 1 and 9', the rotor is arranged to slide on the aXle 27, the sliding being limited by flanges 3']. on the axle 27. It will thus be seen that when the vibrator is held in a position to cause the rotor to be affected by gravity and slide down against one of the flanges, the rotor will be in the path of the stream coming from the nozzle 12, and the device can be used as a vibrator and the stream of fluid then passes on to the screen 26 and passes from the holder. If the device is to be used as a spray alone the holder is tilted and the rotor slides to the position shown in dotted outline at a in Fig. 2, and is not rotated in this position, since the stream of fluid passes directly onto the screen and from that it emerges from the holder as a spray, being broken up bythe screen.
To insure the absence of leaks on the sides of the holder, and to also provide stifiness to the structure, I prefer to provide the axle 27 with heads 32, as will be evident from Fig. 2.
In Fig. l I show a modified form in which on the aXle 27 and is held in one position, the illustration showing flanges 33 to hold the rotor in place against sliding on the shaft. In order to use the device as a spray without vibration, he form shown in Fig. 4t covers a structure embodying a movable nozzle 3 1- which is mounted on a plate 35 which slides in ways 36 on the back of the holder 10. The hose 13 is connected in any way to the mouth 37 of the nozzle. A linger-piece 38 is suitably disposed so that the nozzle can be shifted as desired so as to cause the stream from the nozzle to be directed against the rotor or to pass by the rotor without engaging it. In Fig. 5 is still another modified form, the rotor 28 being provided, in this type, with a collar-39 that is grooved as at L0, and a stem a1 projects through the side of the holder 10 and has its end l2 in engagement with the slot l0 whereby the rotor 28 can be shifted by sliding the stem 4L1 in or out off the casing. A handle l?) is provided for the operation of the stem, and suitable latches l i are provided for securing the rotor in fixed positions when it is desired to lock the rotor against accidental movement from the position in which it is desired to hold it.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1 1; A vibrator comprising a holder, a nozzle for injecting fluid into the holder and out through the front, a rotor arrange to rotate in the holder, and means for suspending the rotor so that it can be shifted into and out of the path of the stream of fluid.
2. A vibrator comprising nozzle for directing a stream of fluid through the holder, a perforated screen in the holder and opposite the nozzle to transform the stream into a spray, and an unbalanced rotor mounted between the nozzle and the screen and adapted to impart a vibration to the holder by its rotation.
8. A. vibrator comprising a holder, a nozzle for directing a stream of fluid through the holder, a perforated screen in the holder and opposite the nozzle to trans form the stream into a spray, a rotor rotatably arranged in the holder, and means for suspending the rotor so that it can be moved into and out of the path of the stream oi fluid from the nozzle.
