Description

GEORGE W. CONLEY, OF WHEATON, ILLINOIS.
SMOKERS STAND.
masser.,
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 10, 1918.
Application led April 16, 1917. Serial No. 162,426.
ings.
This invention relates to ash and cigar receivers, and part1cularly to a smokers stand designed to receive ashes and cigar stumps.
One object of this invention is to provide a relatively largehollow base designed to receive ashes and other refuse, and to provide a top for the base having an aperture, as stated, and providing in connection therewith a rotatable bowl shaped member which, in one position, closes said aperture, and in another position discloses thelaperture, the top having interlocking engagement with the base.
Other objects will appear in the course of the following description.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view of my improved stand; and Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof.
The base of the stand, which is designated 10, is preferably made of metal and is hollow and is enlarged at its bottom so as to provide for suflicient stability. This hollow base 10 is open at the top and may be circu- -lar in cross section, octagonal, or any other desired form and, of course, may be made extremely ornamental. Closing the upper end of the base is a top, designated 11 and preferably this top is somewhat bowl shaped or conical in form, .and is provided with an eccentrically disposed opening 12. Extending downward from the top 11 and formed integral therewith and concentric to the central opening, is an annular sleeve 13, which rits within the base 10, and has telescopic engagement therewith, and preferably the base 10 is formed with bayonet slots 14 and the sleeve 13 has outwardly projecting pins 15,
adapted to engage in sald bayonet slots so that in order to connect the top 11 to the base, the pins 15 are inserted within the bayonet slots and then the top is rotated a partial rotation to engage the pins with the horizontal portions of the bayonet slots.
Extending transversely across the sleeve 13, below the lower end of the opening 12, is a de'lector 16, which is attached to the sleeve 13 at its ends and is transversely V- shaped so that any ashes, trash, etc., which is discharged through the opening 12 will be deflected into the interior of the base 10, but if the base 10 should be overturned accidentally, this deflector 16 will hinder the ashes from being discharged through the opening 12. Disposed rwithin the bowlshaped body is a bowl-shaped member 17 which is pivoted to the. body at its center, and which iS provided with an opening 18. With this construction, when the member 17 is rotated to one position, the openings 18 and 12 will be out of register and, as a consequence, the eiiuvium from the half smoked cigars, ashes, etc., cannot pass upward from the base, but the member 17 may be shifted from time to time, so as to bring the openings 12 and 18 into registry to permit ashes to be discharged into the base.
ANow it is obvious that the base 10, which may be 'made of any desired diameter and of any desired height, is adapted to contain a relatively large amount of ashes, etc., so that it need not be-emptied for days, or even weeks, but when the base becomes filled, or it is desired to empty it for any other reason, it is only necessary to disengage the top from the base and discharge the contents of the base.
It will be obvious that the top may be readily disengaged from the stand 10 so as to discharge the ashes from. the stand and so as to permit the top to be thoroughly cleaned. The delector 16 will tend to impede the discharge of ashes from the stand 10 if the latter should be accidentally overturned and the interlocking engagement of the top with the hollow stand will prevent accidental disengagement of the top from the stand, if the stand be overturned, or if the stand be lifted by its top.
Having described my invention, what I claim is A smokers stand comprising a hollow base forming a receptacle, a bowl shaped top greater in diameter than the base and having a sleeve integral therewith and snugly fitting in the upper' end of said base, the top having an opening disposed ecoentrioally to anddhaving a handle whereby it may be ro- 10 tate In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my the top and a bowl shaped member fitting signature in the'presence of two Witnesses. snugly upon and within the bowl shaped top and pi'votally mounted at its center to the bowl shaped top for rotation, and havi an aperture adapted to be brought into register Ywith the aperture on the bowlY shaped top GEORGE. W. CONLEY.
