JAMES H. RAND, OF NEWTN. MLSSACHUSETTS. l
l INDEX.
Specification of Letters Patent. Pgitnid Sept, 1), 1918,
Application filed October 11, 1917. Serial No. 196,028.
To all lwhom 'it may concern:
lie it known that i. Jules il. RAND, a citizen of the United tit-aire. amlresident of Newton. in the county of Middlesex and State ofMassaehusetts have invented new and useful improvements in Indexes, of which the following' is a speeiiieation.
This invention relates to eard indexesof the. overlapping card, risible index tv vpe and consists in the improvements hereinafter deseribed and particularly pointed `out in the A hinges;
claims.
1n the aecompaIrving` drawings, which illustrate an embodiiiient of the invention,-
Figure 1 is a front elevation of part of an index containing the invention; l
Fig'. 2 is a similar view showing some, of the index elements swung)- upward on their enlarged sca le,
of Fig. .25
ingl guide channels to receive the ends of railsl or bars to which the index elements aie hinged. y
B is a har or rail which is preferably"made of bristohlnmrd, or some other material suf lieientl)v resilient to permit it to be bentv at the middle part away from the frame forthe purpose of drawinga the ends toward ene-h other to insert them into or remove. them from the guide channels A hanger C 'of wire or other suitableI iiexible or resilient. material extends lengthwise of the rail B,
and is secured thereto-at its ends. The preferred method of attaehilig the wire hanger to the rail is to bend over its ends, pass them through perforations in the rail, and clench lor vupset them on the rear side of the. rail.
as shown at c. The, ends of the, hanger terl minute short, of the flanges also as not to ex tend into the guide channels.
on each hanger b v means of a lip d.. which preferably is made of a Strip of sheeteelluloid, or some. sheet materialsutiieiently stiff to hold its shape but. at the same time Sufiieiently 'tiexible or resilientto bend with the rait B. The lip l ma \v 'be folded ovenI the edge of the sheet D Vaiidattaehed to the margin thereof on the. rear side leaving the` front liap free so that the hanger C may he inserted ander the lip. It is desirable to leave enough spaeehetween thefold of the lip f and the edge of the card l) to receive 65 the hanger C so that the haue-er C (will be in the same plane with the card when the. parts ari. assembled. instead of being offset there-frmn either to the, front or rear. The
ends of lip d lterminatev short. of the ends of the hanger thereby permitting* the card D to be shifted somewhat lengthwise of the lianger and so displaced laterally of the frame and the series of cards. Tormallv the tiangres Wr, a, will engage. the edges offl the eardsi) 'and so hold them in central' position in the frame, but. by. springing one end ot the card o ver the adpieent flange a the card ma;l be dlsplaeed and project from the series as shown' in one instance in F ig. 80
l, and So constitute a signal to guide the user to a particular card should he wish for any reason to refer to it readily Without looking through the series to find it.
Many of the advantages ofthe invention ma \v be. obtained with thefeatures thus far described` and the Cards Dtlieinselves may he used for receiving the desired entries 0r records. The card D, however, is preferably used as a holder to Supportfanother re- 9e movable card or sheetinaert E, which overlies the card holder D and is attaehed thereto by slipping its upper edge under the lip d and its lower edge under another'iip, d at the opposite edge of theeard holder. The lip 925 tl is preferably made of t aiisparent sheet materiahsu'clr as eeliuloid,` and is of sufficient depth to forni a protective sheath for the margin of the card E Which is exposedto view when the cards are arranged 1001 as shownin overlapped relation.` Any ini-- dex titles or other inscriptions on the lower v exposed margins of the cards will show through the transparent proteetive vsheeths I or lip d', but will 'be proteeted thereby from 105 Aeard or sheet') is supported and hinged Wear or soiling. The lips d are folded i around the lower edges of the cards D and secured to the margins on the back side, While'the trent fiap is free to form a trough or pocket to receive the edge of the insert E.
In the modiieation shown in Fig. 6A two short hangers C are used in place of a single longer hanger, and two lips d2 engage the hangers instead ofA a single lip as in the other forni. The ends of the lips (Z2 may terminate short of the ends of the hangers C', as
` in the other case, to permititlie card to be elastic pressure,
'lodged when it is swung suitcient resilience to cause the lip al to engage the face of the card D with'a light so that after it is sprung open to allow the hanger C 'to enter the fold, it. will again close against the card, thereby holding ther hanger in place and preventing the card from dropping oliver becomin disupward, as siown in the upper parts of Figs. 2 and 5. The resilient lip cl also serves yieldingly to grip the margin of the card insert E and to aid in holding it in position.`
In use any of the cards may be swung upwardly on their hinge connections, as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 5, to expose the body of any desired card for tliepurpose of inspecting it or making entries on it; and if the user desires to return to any card in the sei-ies for any purpose it may be shifted or displaced sidewise of the frame as shown in Fig. l, to serve as a signal to ,guide vhim to 'the card 1n question, A further vadvantage of the invention 1s that by -mounting the frame on a stand'or support in a slightly inelinedposition as illustrated in Fig. 5. The upwardly swung cards will of themselves remain in upstanding position vas shown without ha'ving to be held by the operator.
This is due in part to the `iactfthat the hinge,v
connection, formed by the foldfof lipd and thelianger C, which is positioned beyond the edges of the card, lies in the plane of the fcard, sotliat when the cards are swung upward even a little past the verticahthe v center of gravity is behind the hinge and the cards tend to remain in upstanding posif tion;'and in part to the fact that the rail an'dhanger, being of flexible resilient materia-htend normallyto curve or bulge torwardly very slightly from the face of the Vframe, and so act with a gentlespring presy -inwthe series laterally with relation 'to the series without supports each eomprisin ,ends mounted in the `guidechannels and a hanger extending lengthwise of and at.
inn
sure .to hold the cards in either extreme position up o1' down, the curve or bulge being flattened as the cards swing past their median position.
