SIPI-ION-PUMP.
v To all 'whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, J EssEl SwEcLE, a citizen oi the United States, residing at Walla `fallin in the county of Walla Talla and State of Washington, have invented new and useful.Improvements in Siphon-Pumps, of which the following is a speciication.
This invention relates to improvements in siphon pumps, especiallyy adapted for usey in siphoning gasolene from the tanks of au? tomobiles butalso adapted for use for other Aso similar purposes, the object of the invention being to provide an improved siphon pump of this character which is simple in construction, is eiective -in' operation, and which can also be used as av squirt gun when desired. Y f n With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the `construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed. Y ln the accompanying drawings Figure l is an elevation, partly in section, of a siphon pump constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention. y
Fig. 2 is a similar' view of the same when arranged for use as a squirt gun.
The cylinder or barrell of my improved siphon pump may be madeA of brass tubing or any other suitable material, is closed at the lower end as at 2 and is open at the upper end and is provided in the upper end with a removable closure 3 which its tightly therein. At av suitable distance fromV its lower end the barrel is provided with a series of small inlet openings 4l. Near its upper end and on one side the barrel is provided with a spout 5 to which a rubber hose 6 of suitable length and diameter is attached;
f A plunger 7 is arranged tooperate in the Y cylinder and comprises a pair of reversely turned leather or other suitable cups 8 which are secured between a pair of washers'- 9 and to the lower end of a plunger rod l0. Said plunger rod extends up through the cylinder and also through a central opening in the closure 3 and is formed or provided with a handle 11 at its upper end. The bottom 2 of the cylinder is provided with an opening 12 of suitable diameter.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept. 3,* 1918.v Application 1ed March 30, 1918. Serial No. 225,722. i i i l To useY the siphon pumpfor siphoning gasolene from a tank which is nearlyjfull the barrel is placed in the tank and the plunger-is drawn Vto the upper endY of the barrel. l This creates apartial vacuum which causes gaso'lene to be sucked up through the barrel and` a siphonic flow to be started Vthrough the barrel and also through the hose G, as will be understood.
lhen using a vpump `to rsiphon gasolene from a tank nearlyV or partially empty the hose should be placed in the tank and eX-1 tended to the bottom of same, and the plunger should be then pushed downto the Y bottomof the cylinder but not below the openings at` the bottom'. This downward movement` of the plunger draws the cylinder. nearly full of gasolene. Then take the `hose out of tank and place the barrel in and use `the same as is stated in siphoning from full tank.
ToY enable the siphon pump to be used` also as a squirt gun, Iprovide a nozzle 13 at the lower end of a cap sleeve 14, which Y Y cap sleeve canbe screwed or otherwise detachably secured to the lower end and so as to close the openings l. f. v
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed asnew is K Y The herein described pump for use as a siphon pump and alsol for use as a squirt gun comprising a cylinder havingan open' ing at the lower end andalso having inlet openings spaced from the lower end, said cylinder being provided with va hose con-V nected thereto at its upper end, a closure in the upper end of the cylinder having 'acen-Q tral opening, 'a plungerarranged to operate in the cylinder, a rod for thev plunger er!l tending through and arranged to operate in the central opening of the closure, and a cap sleeve detachably secured vto the lower K JEssE swEGLE.
