SIPHON APPARATUS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN A. WATTS, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Siphon Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates broadly to siphon apparatus and has particular reference to apparatus of this character sperliially adapt ed for emptying receptacles such as washtubs.
An important object of the invention is to provide ina siphon apparatus of the above mentioned character, an intake head having means to prevent the entrance of air into the head as the water level falls, to enable the liquid in the vessel to be withdrawn therefrom by siphonic action until a very low level is reached, and to prevent any sediment or other solid matter contained in the water entering the intake head, thereby precluding the same entering into the siphon tube.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will be apparent in the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the siphon apparatus, shown in connection with a washtub, Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal vertical sectional view through the intake-head oi the siphon apparatus, and Fig. is a vertical crosssectional view taken on line 8-3 of Fig. 2.
In the drawings wherein is illustrated a preferred embodiment of my in ention, the numeral 1 designates a table upon which is arranged a wash-tub 2, as shown. The tub 2 is partly filled with water, as indicated by the numeral 3. I provide a siphon appa ratus -it for drawing the water out of the tub.
This siphon apparatus comprises an intake head. 5, the shell.6 of which may preferably have the shape as shown. The lower side of this shell is formed open, as shown, and the lower edge of theshell is provided with spaced teeth 7 which result from the formation of the recesses 8 upon said edge. One end of the shell 6 is tapered to form a nipple 9, screw threaded internally, as shown at 10, t'or detachable engagement with a hose or conduit 11. The hose 11 is provided with a suitable externally screw threaded Specification of Letters Patent.

The shell 6 is provided internally thereof witha section of material or web 12, which is preferably cast integlal with the shell, as shown, and inclined longitudinally with relation to said shell. web serves to divide the shell 6 into two compartments 13 and 14. Attention is called to the fact that the upper end of this web 12 terminates in a horizontal plane slightly above the inner end of the nipple 9. By disposing the web 12 within the shell 6 in the manner shown, a tortuous channel for the intake of the water is thus formed and serves to preclude the entrance of air into the shell 6 as the water level in the vessel 2 falls. This function of the web is probably due to the fact that by throttling the flow through the head 6, the suction eti'ect tending to draw in air as well as water when the level in the tub is low is much reduced; while the open end of the shell provides a tree and unobstructed intake for the water. I have found by actual experiment that with an intake head constructed as shown and hereinafter claimed, the liquid in the vessel 2 can be drawn therefrom by siphonic action until a lower level is reached than is possible with a like intake head with the web missing. The web also serves as a deflector for any sediment or other solid matter that may be present in the water, thereby tending to preclude the entrance of the same into the siphon tube.
The numeral 14 designates a spigot, adapted for detachable connection with the outer end of the hose 11, for a purpose to be set forth.
In the use of the siphon apparatus, the suction nozzle is disposed within the tub 3. so that its teeth 7 engage the bottom of the tub, as illustrated in Fig. 1. The hose v 11 or conduit which is connected with the suction nozzle, now has its outer end connected with the spigot 14, and said spigot actuated to supply water to the hose 11. The water fills the hose 11 and drives out the air which previonsly'filled the same. The flow of water from the spigot is cut oil when the air bubbles stop rising from the suction nozzle The outer end of the hose 11 is then lowered below the level of the water 3, whereby the water will be withdrawn from the tub 2, in accordance with the operation of a siphon. If desired, the
hose 11 may be made of a suliicient length This so that its outer end may reach to a server or the like, for discharging thereinto. In lieu of priming the siphon through the agency of the spigot let, the hose maybe filled with Water in any suitable manner, as by placing the entire siphon apparatus below the Water in the tub, until said apparatus is filled with the Water.

Having thus fully described my invention, 1 clain1:-
