Description

UNITED STATES PATENT GFEICE.
FRANK KORTICK, OF MENDOTA, ILLINOIS.
'IMPROVEMENT IN MILL-PICKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 127,774, dated J une l1, 1872.
Specification describing a new and useful Improvement in Mill- Pick, invented by FRANK KoRTIoK, 'of Mendota, in the county of La Salle and State of Illinois.
Figure l represents a longitudinal section of my improved mill-pick. Fig. 2 is a detail side View of the holder, showing the pivoted by placing it between ears, with one end against a step of the rigid jaw, and holding simply by a spring-jaw. Second, it consists in pivoting one jaw so as to swing out laterally. Third, it consists in providing pivoted clamps in the handle, by which the angle of the pick to the handle may be changed.
A is a spring-jaw, of angular form, and B a rigid jaw, upon which it bears elastically, so as t'o hold the tool iirmly in place. They are to be held in a handle, D, of suitable kind. The two jaws are united at one end by a rivet, a, or other means, and are so enlarged or bent in the middle as to t tight within the handle, and to clamp the cutter securely between their open ends. The inner face of the jaw A has a series of steps, b b, formed on it, as shown,
against one of which the upper end of the cutterC bears. Projecting ears d d at the sides of one or both of the jaws prevent all side play or displacement of the cutter. In a mill-pick of this construction the cutter can be almost totally used up, as it is drawn from one step to the other as it shortens. The steps may be rounded, as in Fig. 2, or straight or angular, as may be desired. The jaws can be of malleable or other comparatively soft material, while the cutter will be of steel.
I am aware that pick-blades clamped between the jaws by wedges, or screw and nut, are in public use, but my object is to produce a cheaper and more easily-adjusted article.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is-
1. The arrangement of the spring-jaw A upon pivot a at one end, which holds it to jaw B, but allows it to be moved out laterally, as described.
2. The combination, with angular pick, of the pivoted and adjustableclamps, which-will hold said pick at dierent an gles to the handle.
FRANK KORTlCK.
