GEORGE LB. ROGEIQS, OF IBBJOGKTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
CARRIER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented. sept. a, wie.
Application med February 1s, 191s. serial No. 217,925.
T0 all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE B. ROGERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brockton, county of Plymouth, Gommonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carriers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to article carriers or holders, and is particularly designed'for use in shoe factories in connection with the systematized handling of shoe Vamps and the like. As eachoperative finishes his particular operation, he lays the Vamps to one side to be later gathered together and handed to the next operative. This method of handling is open to several objections, conspicuous among which is the lack of any denite correlation of the several operations or motions incidental to the transfer of the Vamps from one operative to the next.
It is therefore the object of my invention to provide a carrier or holder to which the operative, or a helper, may conveniently attach the vamps as he finishes each so that when a desired number of Vamps is finished, the holder with attached Vamps may be picked up and carried to the next operative and supported near his machine in a position adapting the Vamps for convenient removal singly, thus consecutively relating the several motions into a systematized method of handling.
The construction and manner of using my carrier or holder, together with illustrative embodiments thereof, is shown and described in the accompaniyng drawings and specification, and particularly defined in the appended claims. Throughout the specification and drawings, like reference characters are correspondingly employed, and in the drawings Figure 1 is a View of one embodiment in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a detail illustrating the automatic action of the latch device, and
Fig. 3 is a View of another embodiment of my invention.
The device consists of wire, chain or the like 1 having a metallic or other appropriate eye 2 at one end and a handle 3 at its other end. Where of rope, as shown in Fig. 1, or wire, the ends of the length 1 are looped, as indicated at 4 and 5, and secured by any suitable fastenings, as the clamping bands 6 to receive respectively,
a length of rope,
'formed of a single the eye 2 and the eye 7 of the retainer and handle member 3.
This member 3 may be conveniently piece of heavy wire of low resiliency bent intermediate of its ends to provide the retaining eye 7 for the loop end 5, and having one end formed as a hook 8 and its other end 9 doubled back upon the shank to provide with the opposed portion of the shank a recess 10, the said end preferablyfterminating in a closed loop 17 to eliminate sharp edges. The end 9 above the closed bottom of the recess is bent toward a the shank of the handle 3 to provide a retaining surface 11 for the eye 2. y
In use, the operative inserts the eye 2 through the strap of the vamp, or through or under any other suitable part of the vamp, to string the Vamps on the length of cable 1, and when sufficient Vamps have been attached, fastens the eye 2 by inserting it into the recess 10 defined by the upturned end 9 of the handle member until said eye passes the retaining surface 11, the end 9 yielding sufficiently at this point under the expanding tendency of the eye 2 to allow the eye to pass, and automatically returning to its original position (see dotted and full line showing, Fig. 2), to thereby lock said eye against accidental disengagement from the recess.
The device with the attached Vamps may then be readily carried from place to place in the factory the member 3 affording a convenient handle, and may be suspended in position near t-he subsequent operatives bench or machine by the hook 8.
In the form of my invention shown in Fig. 3, the construction is substantially the same, except that the length 1 is of chain.
Various other modifications in the form and construction of my invention may obviously be resorted to if within the limits of the appended claims.
What I therefore claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a shoe upper Stringer, a length of flexible cable having an eye at one end, and a combination retainer and handle member having a shank portion provided with an eye between its ends adapted to permanently receive the other end of the cable length, one of the retainer ends being bent back toward the shank to provide therewith a closed bottom recess, and a portion of said bent retainer end yieldable and constituting a locking surface adapted to be forced away from the shank portion by the insertion of the eye of the flexible cable and to automatically return to eye locking position vvhen said eye is lodged in said locking recess.
2. A- shoe upper Stringer, comprising a length of flexible cable having an eye at one end, and a combination retainer, handle and suspension device consisting of a one-piece member having a` shank portion provided with an eye between its ends-adapted to per-` manently' receive the other end of' the cable length, oneof the retainer ends being'formed asa suspension-hook, and the' other retainer end bent back toWardj the shank toprovid'e therewith a closed bottom recess,` said bent retainer 'end` yieldable and a portion thereof constituting ai locking surface'adapted to `be Jforced anvayfrom the shank portionl by the insertion of theV eye of the flexible cable and"l locking recess, said shank bent between its ends to provide an* eye, anda cable havingr one endl secured in said eye'` and' liavii'ig its other" end formed or'lcking engagementv with said locking recess.
In testimonywhereof If affix my signature iny presence* off tWo lWitnesses;
