TOY GUN.
To all whom t may concern: Y
Be it known that I, JOHN D. RoBiLoT'ro, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Toy Guns, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to toys, and more particularly to a toy gun for exploding blank cartridges, torpedoes, and similar explosive articles.
In using the ordinary sticks or canes for exploding torpedoes and similar devices the force of the explosion is exerted axially of the cane and, due to this fact, many persons have been injured when using these devices due to an unusually heavy charge of explosive which tends to drive a cane upward with great force. One of the main objects of the invention is to provide a device of the character stated so constructed that the force exerted by the explosive will be along lines which are transverse to the axis of the handle of the device thus eliminating danger lof injury to the user by the handle being driven back by the force of the explosive into the users hand. A further object is to provide a device of this character which may be quickly and easily constructed at small cost. A still further object is to provide a device having a handle and a head secured at one end thereof, this head being so shaped as to provide a reduced striking end which will insure proper explosion of a cartridge placed therein. Further objects will appear from the detailed description.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side view of an exploding device constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the striking end.
Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal section through the head.
The head l is of substantially cylindrical shape for approximately 0f its length, and is tapered toward one end to provide a frustoconical striking end 2. This head is provided with an axial bore 3 extending the full length thereof, this bore corresponding approximately in diameter to the exterior diameter of a cartridge of suitable caliber, such as the commonly used twenty-two calispecification of Letters raient.

' the explosion being discharged through the bore 3.
A short rod 5 is iixedly secured in head l. This rod is fastened in a handle 6 of suitable length, a ferrule 7 being driven on the inner end of the handle to prevent splitting or spreading thereof. Preferably the handle 6 is of such length as to have the head l a considerable distance from the user when the cartridge l is exploded thus avoiding danger of injury from the explosion. By this construction, the force of the explosion is exerted along lines at right angles to the handle 6. This eliminates all danger of injury due t0 the handle being driven toward the user in the case of an explosion of unusual force. It will be evident that this device may also be used for exploding torpedoes, and similar explosive articles, as well as for blank cartridges, and I do not desire to in any way limit its use to this one particular article.
What I claim is:
l. In a device of the character described, a handle, and a head carried at one end of the handle and disposed at right angles thereto, said head being provided with an axial bore extending the full length thereof for the reception of a cartridge to be exploded, said bore serving to permit easy escape of the gases generated by the explosion ofthe cartridge and also facilitating removal of the empty cartridge from the head in the event that the cartridge sticks in the head.
2. In a device of the character described, aliandle, and a head secured to one end of said handle and disposed at right angles thereto, said head being provided with an axial bore extending the full length thereof and having one end portion outwardly tapering to provide a reduced striking end adapt- In testimony whereof I aflx my signature 11i presence of two Witnesses.

ed to enga-ge the perpheml zmge of the head of a, cartridge so as to cause explosion of the charge contained thereby when the cartridge is struck against en objeot, the bore permitting easy escape of gases generated by the explosion and facilitating removal of the cartridge from the heed.
