TORPEDO-EXPLODER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 606,685, dated July 5, 1898.

.To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, AUGUST RIECKE, a cit-izen of the United States of America, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Torpedo-Exploders, of which the following is a speciiication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to improvements in canes and torpedo-exploders, and has for its object the provision of novel means whereby a useful and attractive device of its class may be provided.

A further object of the invention is to provide a combination cane and torpedo-exploder in which the parts are strong and durable and at the same time comparatively inexpensive. In addition to the above the invention may be provided with a magazine in combination with the cane-head, thus affording a dry and easily-accessible receptacle in close proximity to the anvil.

Finally,the obj ect of the invention is to prov vvide such a device composed of a minimum number of parts which will prove eflicient and satisfactory in use either as a cane or as Ja torpedo-exploder, thus making it desirable as a toy or as a cane for campaign and parade purposes.

With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the details of construction, as well as in the arrangement and combination of parts, to be hereinafter more fully set forth and speciiically claimed.

In describing the invention in `detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings, formingpart of this speciicatiomwherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in both views, and in which- Figure l is a view in elevation of my improved cane and torpedo-exploder. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken through the center of Fig. 1, the head being shown in full lines.

In the drawings, l denotes the staff or canestick; 2,a cone-shaped b ody fitting on the staff and having its end formed to'provide a surface to withstand the impact of thehead 3, said head beingcircular in cross-section and forming withthe body an ornamental and perfect handle. The head is provided with 'a bolt 4, cast with or attached thereto and de pending from'its center from the under side, said bolt protruding through a central aperture 5 in the body. In the cone the bolt is surrounded by a coil-spring 8, held between the lower surface of the end of the cone and the head of the bolt, said spring being so arranged as to exert a downward pressure on the head to hold it in contact with the body. Thus any explosive inserted between the head and body will be held in place by the action of the spring, and it will be seen that theV explosive may be inserted at any point throughout the circumference of the head or that one or more charges may be used.

A barrel or shield 9 is arranged in the hollow portion of the head to encircle and protect the bolt and spring, and a door a is provided to cover the opening b, formed in the body, said door sliding in guides c, secured along the edges of the opening. The cylinder so formed is adapted as a magazine to contain the explosive charge.

An exploder of this character is especially adapted for use in parades and for campaign purposes, Where the participants would be placed at a disadvantage were they forced to reach their hands into their pockets for charges.

In view of the foregoing the construction andadvantages will, it is thought, be apparent,it being noted also that various changes may be made in the proportions and other details of construction without departing from the spirit of my invention.v

Having fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is Y l.
