Tonen-SYSTEM naam-REST.
To all whom t may concern.:
Be it known that I, WALTERYJ. ANDERSON, a citizen of the'United'States, residing at Galvestomin the countyof Galveston and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Touch-System Hand-Rests, of which the following is a specification.'
My invention relates to touch system hand rests for usel with typewriter describedin Patent No. -1,247,065 granted to me November 20th, 1917.," i
Y My present invention is designed to improve the construction of the hand rest and provide novel clamps for attaching the rest to the `frame of the typewriter or to a table or typewriter desk, the said clamps to be adjusted and thus adapted to iit the frames of various typewriters, or if desired, fastenedl to a typewriter table or desk.
My invention is also designed to provide such clamps with means for vertically adjusting the height of the hand-rest .relative to the key-board, the object being to accommodate the difference in reach between a long and short ingered operator and thus perfect the ease and touch.
Again, said clamps are so designed that provision is made for pivoting the hand-rest in said clamps, whereby they may be swung back over the key-board, when it is desired to place the cover over the machine.
In the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this speciiication, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a typewriter system hand rests attached to the frame of the machine by means of my clamps. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of one of my hand rests as applied to the front bar of a typewriting machine, and Fig. 3 is a top-plan view of the same. Figs. 4 and 5 are detailed sectional views of my clamps taken in lines 4 4 and 5-5 of Figs. 3 and 2 respectively.
kReferring more particularly to the drawing A denotes the key-board of a typewriterand a denotes the front bar 'of the typewriter frame. B B denotes the right and left hand hand-rest. C C denotes my clamps for attaching said hand-rest to the front bar of a typewriter frame, and said clamps are so designed that they may be attached as well to the edge of a table or typewriter desk andv serve to adjustably support the hand-rest'in fronty of the key-board of the typewriter.'
As shown in the drawings, the main por- Spec'icatvon of Letters Patent.

Application filed February 2, 1918. Serial No. 215,076;
tion of each hand-rest is curved inwardly as shown in my patent referred to above, but in :my present invention, I make the lower part or base b of the rests broader, the inner edges being arc-shape as shown inFig. 3, thereby affording a more comfortable support for the wrist or hand, while the arc-shaped edges afford greater range of play for the lingers of the operator. yDepending from' this base and made integral therewith is a vertical arm b1 round in contour.
kThe clamps C `C arefformedwith cylinv drical openings which register with and through which'the 'arms 51 51 pass and are adapted to slide verticallytherein, whereby the height yof the hand-rest rrelativeto the key-board may be adjusted. To hold the' hand-rest-in adjusted posi-tions, I provide the clamps with set-screws 0 0 as shown in face of the clamps is provided with ratchet teeth c1, and the lower end of the clampsis formed with a Vjaw c2 upwardly inclined. Opposed to jaws 02,'I provide a movable jaw c3 shown in Figs. 2, 3, 4, and 5, which is vertically adjustable, its upper edge engaging the ratchet teeth 01. c4 denotes a lip on jaw c3 provided with a threaded opening which registers with an adjustable set-screw clamp c5 designed to draw the contacting edge of the jaw c3 in contact with the ratchet teeth c1. c6 denotes a vertically movable plate formed with a lug c7 which rides in a guide channel 'formed in the back of the clamps as shown in Fig. 5. y
In order to attach my hand-rest to a type or the edge of a table, or typewriter desk, the lower jaws of the clamps are brought to bear on the under side of the front bar of the typewriter frame, or edge of a table, or desk, as the case may be. The opposing jaw of the clamps is then drawn down by hand to bear upon the upper side of said bar or edge; the set screw clamp is then operated to force the upper edge of the movable jawl 03 in biting contact with the ratchet teeth and hold said jaw' in place. Both jaws are made wide to adapt them for clamping the edge of a table or desk should it be desired to attach the clamps to a table or desk. e
To `adjust the hand-rest vertically to the proper height, relative to the key-board, the depending rods b1 b1 are adjusted vertically in the cylindrical openings in the clamps until the bases ofthe rests are in the same Figs. 1, 3,'and 5. Asl shown inFig. 4 the,V
horizontal plane with the second rovx7 of keys of the typewriter key-board.` To hold the rests inthe adjusted position, the set screws yc o are then set in position to hold the rods in the adjusted position. When it is desired to swing the hand-rests over the key-board of the typewriter the set screws c c are loosened from pressure on the arms b1 1 and the rests may then be turned back over the key-board. With the hand-rests in this position they do not interfere with placing the cover over the typewriter.
It will be evident that my touch-system hand-rest is especially valuable for those learning to typewrite.
Having thus shown my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: 4 f
1. A hand-rest for typewriters adapted to be mountedl to the typewriter frame, desk, or table-in juxtaposition tothe key-board oil/a `typewriter, consisting ofa suitable hand, or
wrist-support provided with a depending arm, a clamping member having a cylindrical opening therein `adapted to receiveand aiord a verticallyk adjustable 'bearing for yadjusted position, a stationary jaw and a movable toothed jaw adapted to clamp a Vtype-writer frame, desk, or table, ratchet teethvadapted to engage said toothed-jaw, and means for holding said jaw engaged.
2. A handrest for typewriters comprising means in common for pivotally mounting and vertically adjusting said hand rest in front of kthe key-board of a typewriter whereby said rest may be adjusted vertically relative to the key-board or swung horizontally` thereover. n j
3. A hand-rest for typewriters of concaved shape, the base of the rest being broadened and having an arc-shapedfinner edge, a vertically depending arm, and a clamp adapted to be attached to a typewriter :Erame, desk, or table, having a vertical cylindrical bearing adapted to pivotally mountandvertically adjust said arm, and means for holding said arm in adjusted position.
In testimony whereof I alX my signature.
