CHARLES B. NEFF, OF DALLASTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN RElN-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 127,634, dated J une 4, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES B. NEFF, of Dallastown, in the county of York and State of Pennsylvania, have invented an Improved Rein-Holder for guiding horses when driving; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference bein g had to the, accompanying drawing making part of this specification Figure 1 being a view of the instrument in perspective as applied to the reins; Fig. 2, a view of the under side of the same.
Like letter designate corresponding parts in both figures.
My invention consists of an instrument which can be firmly grasped by the hand, and has the reins attached securely to it, so that the horse can be held and guided with great ease and security.
The body A of the instrument is of sufficient length and breadth to be grasped firmly by the hand and retain the reins in a proper and convenient position, and thick enough to give it proper strength and form for holding. It may be of wood or other light material of suflicient strength. It has thumb and hand holes a 12 cut through it of suitable shape, as shown, and it may have a leather shield, 0, over it. The reins B B are secured along its two side edges lying in grooves d d for the purpose, formed either by cutting in the wood or by projecting metallic plates ff, as preferred. The reins are attached by thumb clamp-screws g g, or by buckles, or any other equivalent means. The body is preferably somewhat narrower at the rear than at the front end, so as to hold the reins in the proper direction, substantially as indicated.
Unessential variations may be made in construction.
By means of this instrument a horse may be held and guided with comparative ease, even when hard on the bit; and the form is such that a slight lateral variation of its position will guide the horse one way or the other by quickly shortening one rein and letting out the other, so that it is much easier to hold the reins than without it.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- A rein-holder, constructed and operating substantially as herein specified.
Specification signed by me this'8th day of February, 1872.
CHARLES B. NEFF.
