WRENCH.
Specification of lietters Patent. I 2d, 1918 Application filed December 17, 1917. Serial No. 207,570.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED B. LORD, 'a
citizen of the United States, residing at Cambridge, in the county of Middlesex and fication.
This invention relates to wrenches, and has for its object to provide a new and im- 7 proved construction with respect particularly to the shank connections between two members which respectively carry inner and outer jaws, the construction being such that when pressure is applied to the shank handle the jaws will move toward each other, and the shank members will engage and interlock with each other, forming a strong and rigid handle without the, liability of breakage found in other wrenches of a similar type.
A further. object of the invention is to provide a wrench composed of separate members which can be properly tempered, said members being fastened together to produce the complete wrench. 7
Other objects-and advantages will appear from the following description.
In the accompanying drawingsv Figure 1 is a side view of the wrench.
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the wrench applied toa pipe.
'Fig. 3 is a side view of the wrench with the members separated.
Referring specifically to the drawings, 3 indicates the outer jaw the angular face of which is provided with teeth 3*. This jaw is integral with a shank section 3", and the inner face or edge of this shank section is provided with a plurality of shoulders 5, 5, 5 and 5. The shoulders 5'and 5 are presented outwardly or'toward the jaw. The I shoulders 5 and 5 are opposltely presented and are located near the rear end of the shank and form in eflect a dovetail cross groove or mortise which serves for the reception of a dovetailtenon or pro ection 4. on the other member.
This other member comprises an inner jaw 4, the face of which is angular and smooth,
and located at a'proper angle with respect to the outer jaw 3 to grip a pipe or other.
article placed between the jaws. The jaw 4:
is integral with a shank section 4*, and the nner edgeiof this shank section has downwardly presented shoulders 4t. and 4 which theother shank section. The outlines of the 7 the shoulders '5? and 5e and the sections are fastened together by a riveted pin 6 passed throughsuitable holes in the sections. In use, when the wrench is appliedto a.
pipe or the like, as shown in Fig. 2, and preS- sure is applied to the handle, the shank of the inner jaw yields inwardly and the shoulders 4 and' l abut against or interlock with the shoulders 5 and 5*, thereby locking the two shank members together in a direction to resist thestress and strain on the handle. and forming in effect a solid handle of great strength and rigidity. When the pressure is released the shank of the inner jaw recedes. to origmal position.
This wrench has decided advantages with l l respect to manufacture, because the two members can be separately and properly tempered and are much easier to manufacture. The jaw faces are disposed at such an angle that when in action the upper and lower jaw come in closer proximity to each other thus insuring a more efi'ectivegrip on an article between the same, and the dovetail connectionlat the rear end relieves any shearing strain on the connecting rivet be tween the members. Furthermore, this wrench does not depend on any pivotal point of action, the desired result is obtained-by the yielding spring action'of the inner'jaw member.
I claim 1. A wrench comprising outer and inner shank handle members provided with outer and inner jaws respectively, said members being fastened. together at their rear ends,
the outer member having a forwardly pre sented shoulder on its inner edge, and the inner member having a cooperating rearwardly presented shoulder 'onits edge. adjacentthe outer member, said members being adapted tospring together in use to engage said shoulders with each other. 7
