Be it known that I, MARIUS H. HANSEN, a citizen of the United States, residingat Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nursery-Scales, of which the following is a specification.

The purpose of this invention is to provide an improved device adapted to be secured to a scale and intended to support an infant, special objects of the invention being to obviate the necessity of using a pillow or blanket upon the supporting device, and to produce a simple and inexpensive construction.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a scale provided with a support embodying the features of my invention. Fig. 2 is an under side view of said support. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the support, taken in the plane of dotted line 3 of Fig. 1.

While any suitable form of scale may be used, I have herein shown the invention as applied to a spring scale A of ordinary construction, said scale having a post A to the upper end of which is secured the usual platform A The device for supporting the child comprises a base 1, the shape of which may conform to that of the platform A herein the base shown as consisting of a square plate having downwardly extending flanges 2 at its edges. The supporting device fur ther comprises two side frames 3, each side frame consisting of a side bar 4 and two arms 5 extending downwardly at an angle from the ends of the side bar, the lower ends of said arms being secured to the base 1. Preferably the side bar 4: and the arms 5 are formed from an integral piece of wire or rod of suitable gage. At the lower end of each arm 5 is an angular end portion 6 which extends through an opening 7 in one of the flanges 2, said end portion extending along another of the flanges 2 and being secured to the last mentioned flange by means of a screw 8.

As shown in Fig. 2, the two side bars 1 are parallel and the arms 5 converge clownwardly and inwardly toward the base 1.

The side bars 1 support a hammock 9 formed of suitable material such as canvas,

the hammock being herein shown as formed of a single piece of material, the side edges of which are turned under to form a tubular hem 9 which incloses the side bars 1 and a portion of the arms 5. As shown in Fig. 2, the end portions of the hammock are made slightly narrower than the middle portion of the hammock so as to conform to the inclination of the arms 5. Owing to the upwardly idiverging arrangement of the arms 5 at each end of the hammock, the hemmed portions 9 engaging said arms are prevented from sliding up said arms when pressure is exerted upon the hammock.

In assembling the parts, the side frames are inserted through the tubular hems 9 the angular ends 6 of said frames are inserted into the openings 7 and the screws 8 inserted. As the screws 8 are tightened up, the angular ends 6 are drawn toward the flanges 52, thereby swinging the two arms 5 at each end of the hammock away from each other, and thus placing tension on the hammock.

The arms 5 are of sufiicient length to support the hammock at a proper distance above the base 1.

The supporting device may be secured to the platform A by suitable means such as bolts 10 extending through the base 1 and the platform A and having nuts 11 turned upon their lower ends.

It will be seen that it is not necessary to interpose a pillow or blanket between the supporting device and the child, but that on the contrary the child may be placed directly in the hammock 9. It is therefore unnecessary to adjust the scale to allow for the weight of a pillow or the like, the scale being arranged to indicate directly the weight of the child.

In case it becomes necessary or desirable to remove the hammock 9 from the side frames 3, the screws 8 may be removed and the angular ends 6 withdrawn from the openings 7 The fabric may then be slipped oif the side frames.

I claim as my invention:

1. In a nursery scale. abase, two side frames each consisting of a side bar and two downwardly inclined arms, the lower end of each arm being bent to extend through an opening in said base, means for securing said bent ends to the base, and a hammock the side edges of which engage said side bars, the end portions of the hammock being narrower than the middle portion of the hammock so as to conform to the inclination of said arm, said end portions of the ham- Patented Aug. is, 1918;

mock having tubular hems that inclose the upper portions of said arms.

2. In a nursery scale, a support comprising two side bars and four downwardly and irfiwardly converging arms, and a hammock, t e bars, the end portions of the hammock en-s gaging said arms and being held against displacement by the converging arrangement of said arms.

3. In a nursery scale, a base consisting of a plate having downwardly extending flanges at its edges, two side frames each formed of an integral piece of wire bent to provide a side bar and two downwardly and inwardly converging arms, the lower end of each arm being bent to extend through an opening in one of said flanges, means for releasably securing said bent ends to the base, and a hammock consisting of fabric turned side edges of which engage said side to form hems inclosing the side bars and the upper portions of the arms.

4. In a nursery scale, a base, two side frames each consisting of a side bar and two downwardly inclined arms, the lower ends of said arms being attached to said base, and a hammock the side edges of which engage said side bars, the end portions of the hammock being narrower than the middle portion of the hammock so as to conform to the inclination of said arms, said end portions of the hammock having tubular hems that inclose the upper portions of said arms.
