SCALES ADAPTER Filed.Sept. 4, 1956 Riley N. Riddle, Jr.
INVENTOR.
States This invention relates to the class of weighing devices and more particularly to an adapter for conventional bathroom scales.
The primary object of the present invention resides in the provision of an adapter for conventional bathroom scales so as to enable a baby or other small object to be easily and conveniently weighed using a conventional platform-type bathroom scale as are already owned by a large number of families.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of a scales adapter which provides a means for multiplying the usefulness of existing platform-type scales and which is comparatively light in weight so as to enable the scales to be readily compensated for the additional weight of the adapter.
The construction of this invention features a bathroom scale adapter which not only may be formed or molded of any synthetic plastic resins, sheet metal or the like but which may be. made out of a suitable number of parts so as to provide support for a baby not only in a prone position but also in a seated position.
Still further objects and features of this invention reside in the provision of a scales adapter that is strong and durable, simple in construction and manufacture, and which can be manufactured at a relatively low cost thereby permitting wide use and distribution.
These, together with the various ancillary objects and features of the invention which will become apparent as the following description proceeds, are attained by this bathroom scales adapter, a preferred embodiment of which has been illustrated in the accompanying drawing, by way of example only, wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the scales adapter comprising the present invention shown with an infant seated therein;
Figure 2 is a plan view of the bathroom scales adapter; and
Figure 3 is an enlarged sectional detail view as taken along the plane of line 33 in Figure 2 illustrating the construction of the stand which is hingedly formed with the base of the scales adapter.
With continuing reference to the accompanying drawings wherein like reference numerals designate similar parts throughout the various views, reference numeral generally designates a conventional bathroom scale having a platform 12 on which the bathroom scales adapter generally designated by reference numeral 14 is adapted to be positioned. This bathroom scales adapter includes a base assembly 16 configurated to conform generally with the contours of substantially all of the conventional bathroom scales in existence. This bathroom scales adapter 14 may be preferably molded from any suitable synthetic resins such as polystyrene or the like or may be manufactured from sheet metal and is preferably of lightweight construction. Rising upwardly from the base assembly 16 and either integrally molded therewith or attached thereto is a stand 18.
2,931,649 Patented Apr. 5, 1960 Secured to the stand 18 or integrally formed therewith is a body support member 20 which is concave upwardly so as to form a secure means for supporting the body of a baby or other object. Hingedly secured to the body support member 20 by means of. rivets 22 and 24 is a back support member 26 which likewise is concave in shape upwardly and is adapted to abut against either the stand or the edge 28 of the body support 20 to limit the lowered position of the back support member 26.
A latch 30 is pivotally secured as at 32 to the body support 20 and is adapted to engage a stud or lug 34 secured to the back support member 26 tohold the back support member in the raised position as is shown in Figure 1. This is accomplished by the latch 30 being shorter than the distance between the pivot point 32 and the lug 34 when the back support member 26 is in a lowered position.
It is noted that the stand 18 is hollow in construction so as to reduce the weight thereof. As can be seen best in Figure 3, the stand 18 is arch like in configuration, as at 13a, to provide a pair of opposite spaced apart vertical legs 18b, and, as best shown in Figures 2 and 3, the base assembly 16 comprises a pair of oppositely projecting pads 16a on the bottoms of the legs 18b spaced apart by said legs 1%]; and contoured therebetween so as to present a sight opening 161: through which a weight indicator 16a of the bathroom scales 10 may be observed.
The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly, all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
An infant weighing accessory for bathroom scales, comprising a horizontal, generally scoop-shaped body portion having an open back defined by a vertical, U-shaped rear edge, a generally scoop-shaped back support having an open back defined by a planar, U-shaped rear edge, said body portion and said back portion being disposed in rear edge opposed relation with corresponding corners of such rear edges overlapping and pivotally interconnected, a lug fixed to each side of said back portion, an elongated latch rod pivotally connected to each side of said body portion and terminating in a hook at its free end engaging a corresponding lug whereby said body and back portions are held in fixed relation to present a contour for receiving a semi-reclining infant with the infants buttocks resting upon a rear marginal edge portion of said body portion, a vertical stand rigid with and depending from said rear marginal edge portion of the body portion, said stand being generally arch-like in configuration presenting spaced, vertical legs, a base assembly fixed to the lower ends of said legs and being in the form of a pair of pads projecting in opposite directions from said legs and underlying major portions of said body and back portions respectively, said pads being spaced apart and contoured therebetween so as to present a sight opening through which the weight indicator of an associated bathroom scales may be observed.
