ABRAHAM BOGARDUS, OF NEWBURG, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN LEATHER HATS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 127,550, dated June 4, 1872.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, ABRAHAM BOGARDUS, of Newburg, in the county of Orange and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hats or Caps;
and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
My invention consists of a seamless hat or cap, of leather, which is made water-proof by a process of permeation.
The accompanying drawing represents a hat of leather, which is flexible and water-proof.
I form a hat or cap of any suitable leather, and of any desired form, size, or shape. Iuse no exterior coating of any substance to make the hat or cap water-proof.
To prepare the leather a process substantially as follows may be used: In a tin can of proper size I place one gallon of double-rectifled benzine. It is best not to use the common article of benzine. To this I add about five ounces of white paraffine, cut into small par- Put the can in a larger vessel containing hot water. When the matter is dissolved shake it well and pour out enough in a vessel so as to dip the skins; then hang the skins up and let them dry by a draught of wind.
The paraffine used should be white and hard, so that it can be shaved by suitable means.
By this process the leather is not discolored, but is made perfectly water-proof and flexible without coating with shellac or other substances; and when completed presents a neat and glossy appearance. 7
I do not confine myself to this particular process for making the leather water-proof, as other processes may be used for this purpose, so that the leather may be water-proofby permeation.
I take the leather thus rendered water-proof and form the hat or cap in any of the wellknown ways.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As an article of manufacture, a seamless flexible leather hat or cap, made water-proof V by a process of permeation, substantially as herein set forth.,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 23d day of April, 1872. i
ABRAHAM BOGARDUS.
