Description

Umrnn snares PATENT cannon.
HERBERT BUFFINGTON, OF SOUTH BEND, WASHINGTON.
WATERPROOF PAPER.
No Drawing.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HnnBnR'r vBurrmcrrox, a citizen of the United States, residing at South Bend, in the county of Pacific and State of lVashington. have invented a new and useful aterproof Paper, of which the following is y a specification.
This invention relates to a water proof paper and to a. method of preparing the same.
7 Heretofore persons engaged in outdoor work and who ha ebeen compelled to make or read notes, have been greatly handi-' capped in stormy weather because of the" Oxid of zinc 65% Vhite dammar varnish 30% Vheat flour 5% The above ingredients are thoroughly mixed and are then combined with twice the amount of naphtha.
lhe paper to be treated, and which can be of any desired grade, is dipped in this liquid until thoroughly saturated. It is Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 25, 1917.
Application filed May 31, 1917. Serial No. 172,009.
then. removed from the liquid, the surplus liquid composition permitted to drip therefrom and the paper then placed on a rack or other holder until thoroughly dry.
It is possible not only to treat separate sheets in the manner described but entire books can be saturated and permitted to dry.
It has been found that after the paper has been treated it will withstand the action of water and will retain its stiffness. It has also been found that pencil marks made on paper thus treated will not be washed therefrom. Thus the paper is especially useful for outdoor use.
\Vhile the proportions are usually those hereinbefore stated, it is to be understood that the same may be varied somewhat. This is particularly true of the amount of naphtha used as this will depend greatly upon the grade of paper being treated.
\Vhat is claimed is:
1. A water proof paper including an ordinary paper base having a filler consisting of oxid of zinc, white varnish and wheat flour.
2. A water proof paper consisting of an ordinary paper base having a filler of oxid of zinc 65%, white varnish 30% and wheat flour 5%. r
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I havehereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
HERBERT BUFFINGTON.
