UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
morass CHARLES couLL AND WILLIAM ELLISON McLEAN, or DUNEDIN. NEW ZEALAN'D. I i
' PAPER-FILE.
To all whom it may cancer-m ,7
Be it known that we, THOMAS CHAR ES Conn and WILLIAM ELLISON MoLnAN, cltizens of the British Empire, residing at the city of Dunedin, in the Dominion of New means whereby some or all of the papers filed on vertical illars at one side of a plate attached to the Hiack cover of a paper file may be readily removed therefrom and so that a paper or papers may be readily removed from' or inserted in the file at any point desired, and whereby also all or a portion or portions of the papers may be bound with covers in book form in the act of being removed from the file without disturbing their position.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention, Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the invention in operation.
According to this invention there are preferably threepillars 1 with arched tops 2 attached-at their lower ends to a horizontal rod 3 hinged to one side of a plate 4 attached to the back cover of the file. The rod 3 has secured to it midway, a hexagonal portion 5 which engages-a flat spring 6 secured to the plate 4:. The flat spring 6 has a curved extension 7 which is adapted to embrace the V hexagonal portion 5 and retard its revolution at the same time permitting the arched pillars to'be moved back so as to leave a large space for the binding operation hereinafter described. At the other side of the plate 4.- are three vertical pillars 8 and 13, opposite respectively to the pillars with arched ends. The outside pillars 8 are hollow and the central pillar 13 is solid and ends in a pointed hook 10. The middle arched pillar 1 is preferably hollow so that its end 9 may fit on the pointed hook 10. This pillar 1 may be solid with an end shaped to fit the pointed Specification of Letters Patent.

hook 10. Instead of three pillars there may be two pillars 1, 1 with arched ends 2 cooperating with two corresponding vertical'pillars 8. The arched ends of the two outside pillars 1 are adapted to engagethe tops of the two opposing hollow pillars 8. The plate and the back cover to which it' is secured are perforated with holes in continuation of the two outside hollow pillars.
In operation the known binder cover 11, with adhesive fla similarly perforated is first put on the le resting on top of the back cover and the papers are filed over it.
The arched pillars are then pulled over to front cover similarly perforated is then put on the file on top of the remaining papers. A cord 12 is then passed up through an outside vertical pillar 8 through the hook 10' of the middle pillar 13 and down the other outside .pillar'8. The papers are then together with the binder cover and auxiliary cover in a known manner raised from the file and in that act the hookpulls the cord down through the middle pillar below the binder cover where it is engaged and tied up by the loose-ends of the cord in a known manner, thus binding the papers together. The adhesive flap is then secured over all in a known manner. A
Having now described our invention we declare that what we claim is:
A paper file, comprising in combination a late, a pair of hollow pillars rising from said plate, another pillar located midway between said hollow pillars and extending from the plate in the same direction as the ing through the interspace between said bar and the plate, said spring being provided names to this specification in the presence of with a bifurcated extension embracing the two subscribing witnesses.
cam and in engagement therewith, the two THOMAS CHARLES COULL. drums of said bifurcated extension being 10- VVILLIAM ELLISON MOLEAN. cated at opposite sides of one of the arches Witnesses:
on said bar. CLEM. E. JONES,
In testimony whereof we have signed our S. R. GRAHAM.
