UNTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GAIUS C. MOORE, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO JOHN C. MOORE CORPORA- TION, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
LOOSE-LEAF BINDER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GAIUS C. MOORE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Loose-Leaf Binder, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to loose leaf binders of that class in which one of the cover leaves carries preferably fixed impaling posts, and it matters not whether such posts be sectional or otherwise, adapted to be engaged by the leaves which are provided with suitable openings therefor and such binder provided with a second, and preferably the upper, cover leaf carrying mechanism engaging over the impaling posts and adapted to be removed therefrom by moving the same in a direction at right angles to, rather than longitudinally of, the posts.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a clamping mechanism for such binder adapted to hold the removable cover firmly in place and provided with an operating member for the clamping mechanism, the direction of the movement of which to cause the clamping mechanism to engage the posts is substantially the same way as that of the movement of the cover for engaging the posts, whereby the movement of the clamping lever to its operative position serves to force and hold the follower plate into proper engagement with the impaling posts.
The accompanying drawings, illustrating a loose leaf binder in accordance with my invention, are as follows:
Figures 1 and 2 are plan views of the follower plate, with the cover thereof removed to show the clamping mechanism in its inoperative and in its operative position respectively. Fi 3 is a perspective view of the assembled follower plate in engagement with the posts carried by the under or fixed plate of the binder. Fig. 4 is a side View of a loose leaf binder in which the parts seen in Fig. 3 are incorporated in the usual way.
Referring to the drawings,-T will first describe the mechanism of the removable follower plate.
A is a channel plate provided with side walls a and a and slots 0 for receiving the impaling posts. In this channel plate A are pivoted the right and left hand clamping levers E, as seen, upon rivets or studs 6 Specification of Letters Patent.

headed down over suitable washers 6 The clamping plates E are normally held in their inoperative positions, seen in Fig. 1, by means of springs s of wire bent to the form indicated in Figs. 1 and 2. The operating rod R is bent upon itself, near its middle, as seen at P, such bent up portion having an upwardly extending member 1 at its center to provide an engaging member adapted to be operated by the hand of the user. This rod R is normally held in position and against upward movement by the portions (0 of the side wall a of the plate A forced inwardly, as seen in Figs. 1 and 2. This rod R is' prevented from longitudinal movement within the channel plate A by suitable tongues pressed inwardly therefrom, as seen at a The rod R is bent up, near its ends, to form two cam-like members, as seen at 1, adapted to engage against the upwardly extending tongues 0 formed on the outer ends of the clamping levers E, all of which members, under the influence of the springs s, are normally held in the positions indicated in Fig. 1.
Upon forcing the portion r of the rod R, downwardly in Fig. l, the parts are caused to assume the positions indicated in Fig. 2 which is the operative position for the clamping plates E. The channel plate A is provided with a suitable and similarly channeled cover plate B having side walls I) and slotted to receive the impaling posts 0, secured in the plate C as seen in Fig. 3. The upper wall of the upper channel plate B is provided with an opening to receive the portion r of the rod R, whlch is shown in dotted lines at r in its inoperative position in Figs. 3 and 4.
In an assembled binder made in accordance with my invention, the plate C is suitably bound with leather as indicated at C in Fig. 4, and has connected thereto, flexibly if desired, the lower cover leaf D, while the assembled clamping mechanism is inclosed within a suitable binding, as seen at A in Fig. 4, to which the upper cover leaf F is secured flexibly, as indicated, by means of the member f between such cover leaf F and the bound in clamping plate A The operative position of the member r is indicated in full lines in Fig. 4 and, in dotted lines at r is seen the inoperative position for releasing the clamping mechanism and permitting the cover F and the bound in follower plate A to be withdrawn, with out being moved up over the upper ends of the impaling posts 0.
It is believed from the foregoing description, that the construction, operation and method of using my loose leaf binder are sufliciently clear to call for no further explanation herein.
That I claim is:
1. In a loose leaf binder, a cover member carrying a plurality of impaling, posts; a follower plate provided with slots adapted to receive the impaling posts; clamping members carried by the follower plate adapted to engage with the posts and a common operating means for such clamping members adapted to be moved toward the open ends of the slots in the follower plate to force such clamping members into engagement with the posts.
2. In a loose leaf binder, a cover member carrying a plurality of impaling posts; a
follower plate provided with slots adapted to receive the impaling posts; clamping members carried by the follower plate adapted to engage with the posts and a com mon operating means for such clamping members comprising a rod carrying a cam adapted to engage each clamping member to force the same against the corresponding post when the plate is in position and carrying also an operating handle extending through an opening in the follower plate and adapted to be moved toward the open ends of the slots to force the clamping members into engagement with the posts.
3. In a loose leaf binder, a cover member carrying a plurality of impaling posts; a follower plate provided with slots adapted to receive the impaling posts; clamping members pivotally supported on the follower plate and adapted to be swung into engagement with the impaling posts and a common operating means for such clamplng members adapted to be moved toward the open ends of the slots in the follower plate to force such clamping members into engagement with the posts.
4:. In a loose leaf binder, a cover member carrying a plurality of impaling posts; a follower plate provided with slots adapted to receive the impaling posts; clamping members carried by the follower plate adapted to engage with the posts; a common operating means for forcing such clamping members into engagement with the posts and means whereby the thrust exerted upon such common operating means in moving the same to its operative position to force the clamping members into engagement with the posts tends to force the slotted follower plate and the posts relatively together and into engagement with the posts engaging against the bottom of the slots.
