To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, SAMUEL C. LAY and FREDERICK BAK citizens of the United States, and residents of Ridgeville and Detroit, respectively, counties of Randolph and Wayne, respectively, and States of Indiana and Michigan, respectively, have invented a certain new and useful Broom-Stapling Machine; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference bein had to the accompanying drawings, in w ich like letters refer to like parts. r
This invention relates to work supports for broom stapling machines, and is a division of our former application, Serial No. 148,132, filed February 12, 1917, for broom stapling machine.
The prime feature of the invention is the means for elevating the work supporting table so as to rest a broom head in position to engage the staple driving mechanism which comprises a sliding frame having a curved surface for cooperation withv the curved surfaces upon the uprights on which the frame operates.
A further feature of the invention is the provisionrof automatically operated means for giving lateral swinging movement to the frame, whereby the curved surfaces thereof will be caused to travel over the curved surfaces of the uprights to move the frame and work supporting table attached thereto upwardly or downwardly. A further feature of the invention is the provision of yielding parts employed for moving the sliding frame back and forth, so that when a thicker broom head is placed upon the table and moved into engagement with the stapling mechanism, the operating parts employed for raising the table will yield to compensate for the thicker broom head. Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The full nature of the invention will be understood from the accompanying drawings and the following descriptlon and claims I Figure 1 is an end elevation of a broom stapling machine showing the work supporting means attaehedthereto. Fig. 2 is 'a side elevation thereof showing the work support in its lowered position. Fig. 3 is a detail side elevation of the machine showing the work table 1n elevated position and Fig. 4 1s an enlarged sectional view as seen on line H of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal indlcates a supporting base upon which is mounted an upright frame 11, and upon the upper portion of the frame 11 are bearings 12 through which the shaft 13 extends, said shaft being connected at one end to the driving wheel 14 through a clutch mechanism 15 of the ordinary construction, and by means of which the driving wheel 14c is thrown into and out of operation with the shaft 13.
Adjacent the lower portion of the machine is a foot lever 16 which is secured to a shaft 17, and on said shaft 17 is secured a lever 18 extending within the base 10. Pivoted to the end of the lever 18 is a rod 19 which is connected at its upper end .to the clutch mechanism 15 for operating said clutch mechanism, whereby the operation of the machine may be manually controlled.
Secured to'the shaft 13 is a gear 20 which drives a chain 21, said chain passing around an idler 23, a gear 22 and around a gear 2 1- on the shaft 25 mounted in the base 10, and then back to the gear 20.

3. The combination with a frame, and a staple driving mechanism thereon, of a work supporting mechanism comprising a work table, a shaft attached to the work table, a standard on said frame in which said shaft is vertically slidable, a pair of frame members pivoted at their upper ends to said work supporting table, said frame members having their lower ends convexly curved, extensions on the standard having their upper edges concavely curved and adapted to receive the curved ends of the frame members, the center of curvature of the curved portions being displaced from the axis of vertical motion, a drum having a camway therein, means to rotate said drum, a pivotally mounted lever, a roller on said lever entering said camway and adapted to travel therein, and a rod connecting the upper end of said lever with said frame members, whereby when said lever is swung back and forth the frame members will be operated to raiseor lower the work supporting table.
4. The combination with a broom stapling device, including a frame and staple driving mechanism thereon, of a work supporting table, a shaft depending from said table, a standard on the frame having a socket to receive said shaft, extensions on said standard having their upper edges concave and inclined to displace the center of curvature thereof from the axis of vertical mot-ion,
frame members pivoted to the work carrying table having their lower ends convex and inclined to displace the center of curvature thereof from the axis of vertical motion, and adapted to cooperate with the inclined concave edge of the extensions, and
means to swing said frame members lat-' yielding means for normally holding the parts of the rod fully extended.
