Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Se it known that l, Euro1-I T. H. SPERL, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machines for Finishing the Surfaces of Irregular-Shaped Articles; and ll do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and represent, iii- Figure 1 a side view of a machine for finishing the surfaces of irregular shaped articles. Fig. 2 a front view of the upper portion of the machine and with the cutter wheel removed. Fig. 3 a rear view of the same with thc cutter-wheel attached. Fig. 4 a top or plan view. Fig. 5 an end view of the work-holder or lug. Fig. 6 a side view of the gun frame or receiver illustrating one article adapted to be finished on this machine, the arrows thereon indicating` the motions which are imparted to the work.
My invention relates to an improvement in a machine for finishing the surfaces of irregular shaped articles, particularlyT articles of metal where it is desired to have the articles closely conform in shape to each other.
The object of this invention is to provide a machine in which an article will be supported and turned in such a way that all surfaces within a fixed area may be finished at a single operation irrespective of the form of the device; and the invention consists in certain details of construction and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter,
described and particularly recited in the claims.
In carrying out my invention, l employ a surfacing disk or cutter 2 which is mounted on a horizontal shaft 3 fixed in the top of the frame 4 supported by a bed 5 upon legs 6. 0n the shaft is a gear 7 meshing with a gear 8 on a driving shaft 9 carrying pulleys 10 by which power may be applied to the shaft 9. The shaft 3 also carries a gear 11 meshing with a gear 12 on a shaft 13 and so that the shaft 13 is driven with the shaft 3. On the shaft 13 is a bevel gear 14 connected with a clutch member 15 meshing with a horizontally arranged bevel gear 16 coupled by a universal joint connection 17 with a bevel gear 13 meshing with a gear 19 on a worm screw shaft 20 carrying a worm 21 turning a worm wheel 22 on the main work-shaft 23, which is provided at its outer end with a work-holding chuck 24 adapted in form to support any particular article to be finished. As herein shown, it is adapted to receive the tangs 25 and 26 of a gun frame or receiver 27 the portion adjacent to the inner ends of the tangs being the part to be finished. The shaft 23 eX- tends through a support. 28 mounted on a table 29 which is pivotally connected at 30 with an elevator plate 31 connected by a link 32 with a balancing lever 33 which is pivoted in a bracket 34 depending from the bed 5. Hung on this lever is a weight 35 which may be moved by a screw 36. rfhis lever 33 is also connected by a link 37 with a foot-treadle 38, the point of connection with the treadle being on the opposite side of the pivotal point 34 from the weight 35. Slidably fixed on the shaft 23 is a bevel gear 39 meshing with a bevel gear 40 connected by a universal joint coupling 41 with a compensating cam 42 having a cam-groove 43 into which enters the finger 44 of a compensating roller 45 which bears upon the chuck 24 or the work carried thereby. ln the top of the cam 42 is a short post 46 which is adapted to trip a latch 47 projecting from a rock shaft 48 from the opposite end of which projects a latch 49 in position to engage with a lug 50 on an operating lever 51 which is adapted to be moved by a handle 52 to throw the movable member 53 of the clutch into or out of engagement with the member 15. rlhis handle is normally moved inward by a spring 54 and is held outward by the engagement of the latch 49 with the lug 50. Slidably mounted on the shaft 23 is a bevel gear 55, supported by an l.-shaped bracket 56, and meshing with a bevel gear 57 which carries a box-cam 58 receiving the finger 59 of a lever 60 which is mounted in the end of an lL-shaped bracket 56, and coupled with the shaft 23 and so that as the cam moves the finger 59 the shaft 23 will be moved back and forth. Also connected with the bevel gear 57 is a fianged cam 61 bearing on a roller 62 mounted on the elevator 31 and so as to raise the top of the plate 29 with relation to the elevator and thus lift the rear end of the shaft 23, this movement being compensated for by the universal slip-joint connection 17.
It may here be stated that the cams 61 and 43 are duplicates of each other so that as the work is tilted by the cam 61 the compensating roller 45 will be moved in unison with it. The shaft 23 and its chuck may be moved vertically by the downward movement of the elevator 31. In operation the cutter 2 is constantly driven and after work has been fixed in the chuck 24 the handle 52 will be drawn outward to move the rod 51 and throw the movable member 53 of the chuck into connection with the member 15 and so move the bevel gear 14 and through that rotate the work beneath the cutter. As the lever 51 is drawn out the lug 50 is caught by the latch 49.
As before stated, the work will be moved up and down, and rocked and reciprocated back and forth so as to present all surfaces with- .in a predetermined area to the cutter. When the work has made a complete revolution, the lug 46 on the cam 42 will t-rip the latch 47 turning the rock-shaft 48 and releasing the latch 49 from the lug 50 so as to allow the slide 51 to move rearward under the action of the spring 54 and throw the clutch out of engagement with the member 15, thus stopping the movement of the work. After the work is completed, a movement ofthe treadle 38 will depress the elevator 31 and drop the work away from the cutter wheel 2 allowing it to be conveniently removed from the chuck and a new piece inserted.
I claimt- 1. In a machine of the type described, the combination with a frame, of a shaft, a cutter mounted on said shaft, means for driving said shaft, a work-holding shaft having a work-holder arranged positioned in the path of the cutter, a table connected with said work-holder shaft, cams for moving the shaft back and forth and for rocking the said table whereby the work is moved beneath the cutter.
2. In .a machine of the type described, the combination with a frame, of a shaft, a cutter mounted on said shaft, means for driving said shaft, a work-holding` shaft having a work-holder arranged below the cutter, a table connected with said workholder shaft, cams for moving the shaft back and forth and for rocking the said table whereby the work is moved beneath the cutter, and a compensating roller bearing upon the work-holder and moving in unison with 'the means for moving the work-holder shaft.
3. In a machine of the type described, the combination with a rotary cutte'r,'a workholder shaft carrying a chuck positioned in the path of the cutter, a table, a support on the table for the inner end of said shaft, cams movable with the table and adapted to tilt the table and move the shaft back and forth, an elevator to which the table is pivotally connected, and means for raising and lowering the elevator. In a machine of the class described, the combination with a cutter mounted upon a rotatable shaft, means for driving said cutter shaft, a shaft parallel with the cutter shaft and driven thereby, a workholding shaft having a work holder arranged in the path of said-cutter, adjustable connections for driving the work-holding shaft from the said parallel shaft, a table supporting said work-holding shaft, cams carried by said table and adapted to move said work-holding shaft back and forth and raise the table whereby the inclination of the work-holding.

5. In a machine of the type described, comprising a cutting disk mounted upon a rotatable shaft, a work-holding shaft having a work-holder arranged in the path of said cutting disk, means for revolving the work-holding shaft, including a clutch mechanism for moving the shaft with the cutter, a compensating disk moving with the work, a cam adapted to move said compensating disk, a stop on said cam, a lever for operating said clutch mechanism and provided with a lug, a latch mechanism adapted to engage with said lug` and be tripped by the stop on said cam whereby the movement of the work-carrying shaft will be arrested at the completion of each revolution.
